| Don't know for certain but I'm confident they could and I really don't see how it could count on a teams cap.

| IIRC personal sponsorship counts in some way. Didn't Scully have some issues when he used to do the Gillette commercials?

Only if the company involved has any connection with the club - that connection can be something as innocent as having an advert in the programme. If they don't it doesn't count.

| It's a pathetic rule. I was discussing it yesterday. It appears that the only way RL players can earn money is by their basic salary. Do image rights count towards the cap too?

YepImage Rights Payments

Image rights payments are purely a method of avoiding income tax paymets. Nothing more.

Not any more they aren't. Any club that paid players for their image rights and did so without deducting PAYE tax is facing a bill from HMRC. Hull's new owner just had to hand over £1m apparently.

It's ridiculous. So what's the point of a player trying to get a sponsorship deal, earn some extra money and in the process upping the image of the game?
As far as I know, in American leagues such as the NFL, NHL etc, a player's sponsorships are separate to their team's salary cap. ATEOTD, what a player does away from his team shouldn't have any bearing on his team's wage bill.

Exactly. In football or RU, if a company chooses to pay a player to advertise their brand it's so much easier. No wonder our game is in the dumps. The RFL really need to rethink some of their rules, and try to focus on promoting the game and the players to a wider audience. It's so easy to do, adverts are all over the place.

| On the point of Sculthorpe I think it was allowed as he did all the advertisements on behalf of GB RL not Saints.
For the rest I think its stupid the players arent allowed to do anything like this. I mean can you imagine the amount Sam could make from being on advertisements for local businesses or how likely he would be to stay on if someone gave him his own car that he didnt have to pay for or whatever saving him however much money a year.
Ive brought this up on here before though. Does anyone have access to Saints accounts etc? I drive past Jon Wilkins house to work and I often see his stickered car from James Edwards as well as James Graham's similar motor. This company sponsor Saints so is this not an infringement?
