Following Friday's game at Hull KR, Wigan Chairman Ian Lenagan informed the press that Michael Maguire would be leaving the Club at the end of this season to take up the position of Head Coach at South Sydney Rabbitohs.
The Chairman read out the official media release revealing the news, thanking Michael for his efforts in 2010 which saw the Club win the League Leaders Shield and Grand Final and looking forward to a succesful season under him in 2011, Ian was then asked the following questions by the media,
Has it come as a shock?
Yes it has, the first we knew of it was Michael talking to us about it as a possibility ten days ago but he actually resigned today at lunchtime, he did keep me informed that he had been involved with these conversations
Asked whether it had been considered releasing Michael to Souths immediately?
There was no question of releasing Michael at all, it's not at all acrimonious, we rate Michael extremely highly, we get on with him well, we understand that he wishes with his family to go back to Australia and we would not stand in the way of that. We are really looking forward now that the news is out of the way to playing against St Helens next weekend and having a good season. Michael is very ambitious in terms of what he wants to achieve before he goes back.
Asked whether the news was disappointing?
I think it is a disappointment because Michael is a very special Coach, people like Kris Radlinski say he is the best Coach he has ever seen and we are delighted that we will have had two years with him. He has put together a set of systems and proceedures in place at Wigan together with me and the rest of the staff recruited a great bunch of people and we are convinced he will consolidate that in the next 6-8 months and hopefully win something else before he goes back and we will carry on exactly as before.
We have been in the dressing room for the last ten minutes, Michael wanted to tell the players first with all of us there, it is obviously a shock to the players but life goes on.
Asked about the process now for a replacement from 2012?
We have to have an eye out for possibilities but we have a very good set up in place, Shaun Wane obviously has to be favourite as far as the job is concerned but since Shaun didn't know about it until half an hour before the game, he, Kris Radlinski and Mark Bitcon are three senior people who are very important to us going forward and we are very content with the way things are.
We are disappointed Michael is going, we wanted him for another year and would ideally liked him for more than that but we wish him the greatest fortune with his family and with Souths as far as the future is concerned.

| Well atleast lenegan didnt string it out fair play to him for being honest and saying what he thinks instead of no comment i for one am sick to death of aussies not commiting to contracts and coming over for a holiday i think we need to pick the next coach for the long term if it is shaun wane give him a 4 yr contract and stick with it mcguire will become a statistic of how many coaches we have had over the past 10 yrs and i am dissapointed in him i thought he would have been here for 5 yrs then go back to the nrl as he is still only 36/37

Like I wrote in my other post I think MM taking a risk taking a NRL job so soon he won't have a impacted like he did when he came to us , he brought new ideas here the NRL already play his ideas after watching a load of games this yr you can see were Wigan got there ideas from simlar plays , but good luck to him I hope he does do well but like I say is it a big risk for him so early in his career

| Lot s of mixed replies from the Ozzys
SOUTH Sydney have announced that the future of the club will be in the hands of rookie coach Michael Maguire for the next three years.
The Rabbitohs confirmed the worse-kept secret in rugby league with a press statement this morning.
Maguire, currently coaching in the UK Super League with Wigan, said he was prepared for the greatest challenge of his career.
"My wife Joelle and I are from large families and a big draw card of my decision was to have them within easy reach of our young kids, especially our eldest who starts school next year.," Maguire said.

I just hope he can do something about their woeful defensive record. It doesn't take an Einstein to get that right. Play a few videos of matches where the defence BY THE WHOLE TEAM was the high light of the game, and get rid of any players who are too brain dead to understand what's needed.

Dave of Surry Hills...you may be right. Souths have certainly been through a few coach's in recent years. In my opinion they have treated their head coaches poorly. The coach is part of the team and in recent history the players and the administration have been letting him down. Lets hope for change. Dave...I hope you are wrong. Good luck to you Michael Maguire. Go the Bunnies!

Not Happy Jan Posted at 12:15 PM Today
After watching Wigan play the Dragons, I realised this bloke is a good coach. Wigan played a very tough, disciplined and fast style of football. A style I have never seen from an English team before. I felt he would be contributing positively to the ESL and therefore raise the bar over there as well. This would ultimately mean the English game would have been a real match for us in the future. To my disappointment, he's going to souffs. Oh well, looks like the English will stay where they are.

I cannot understand why from trying to get the best coach in the game the club turns to a Neville Nobody. Yes his done a bit at Wigan, but big deal. He will another that will be sacked and paid out.

League is at its best when souffs are down and out!! nothing better than watching them lose, seeing Russels antics...Why cant they find a coach who has at least played a game for the club and has some association with it, instead of buying in imports? The Bulldogs are clearly the bench mark in that department, their coaches have always had knowledge of the culture within, rather than just trying to make a whole new one! not that im one to give advice, but just an idea...as long as they keep losing, its all good!

Paul Lapworth of Conder ACT Posted at 1:58 PM Today
It took a great defensive effort from the Dragons to hold out Wigan in the World Club Challenge. I doubt many other NRL sides could have beaten Wigan that day. If Maguire can instill that sort of defence at Souths then they will definitely be a major threat in the NRL. You never know, Maguire might just be able to convince some of the top talent to transfer from the ESL to the NRL. How good would it be to see Sam Tomkins in the NRL?

Bad move Souths Posted at 2:39 PM Today
Souths are not a club that struggle to score points , in fact they are 2nd in points scored to the Storm so far this season . What they do struggle with is defence where they are the worst in the NRL . When people talk of Maguire the words game plan and analytical are used to describe him and i am wondering how that will help them develop the backbone to defend their try line . Steve Folkes winning percentage as an NRL coach is 56.3 % and he would have been the perfect man to make men out of the under performing Rabbits .

I think there's a good chance Deacon will get the #2 spot next to Wane. Rads will no doubt continue in the role he's in.

| As I posted on the Saints board when they were crowing about us going into freefall when Maguire leaves thats simply won't happen whilst the most important man at the club is here and that man is............................Ian Lenagan!
Say what you want about Maguire, Wane or the players but this is the guy that has put us back on track and whilst he's here we'll be fine.

Agree totally. Regardless of how good Madge has been for the club, Lenegan brought him here in the first place, so full credit to Ian. Lenegan's track record suggests he'll make the right decision in replacing Maguire.
