After reading this on another forum it seems russel Crowe has put his foot in it on a t.v show saying how much GI is going to earning so the salary cap guys have sqashed the move.

Come on lenegan work your magic could GI be the signing that lenegan said could come up unexpectadly .

It's a strange sport when the game's administrators seem to rejoice in preventing its current greatest player from finding a club.

What was that old phrase - lions led by donkeys.

To be honest, it's better to have squad depth, than spend a fortune on big money players like Inglis and leave yourself with less quality in squad numbers 14-22 ish. Carmont could be three times cheaper than Inglis but would Inglis offer us three times more than Carmont? I'm not sure he would.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to see Inglis here, but in this salary cap world, buying expensive three-quarters from Australia isn't the way to go in my view. Half Backs, Forwards maybe but not wingers/centres. If your half backs are quality and your forwards are on a roll then you don't need top quality out wide, as proven by D.Goulding. Even K.Pryce, whatever you think of him, claimed 13 tries in 9 games last year.

I'd hate it if we signed Inglis. We have a Grand Final winning squad, we're the champions, and we've already signed three Aussies to 'strengthen' us as it is.

We're under strength at international level, so Wigan are in the best position to - and NEED to - lead the way in producing home grown talent.

And that means not signing Aussies.

Inglis is comparable with the very best Aussie players I have been fortunate enough to see in my lifetime, such a Kenny, Lewis and Johns. Any team that was fortunate enough to have him on their playing roster would give their fans memories to cherish/bore their grandkids with for the rest of their lives. I don't for one minute think his signing is a possibility but to suggest the above pal is crackers. Inglis is a freak of a talent who can win games on his own.

I appreciate that people may not want Inglis at Wigan because of wage balance considerations, etc, but I agree with JTB that if the game were to lose Inglis, we'd have lost a remarkable talent.

Believe it or not, there are still folk on TotalRL who think that losing players like Sonny Bill Williams, Israel Folau and Greg Inglis is a price worth paying for the sake of the salary cap.

Well, empty vessels making a lot of noise on the terraces is one thing, but how the actual administrators of the game - how the administrators of ANY game - can sit back and allow the loss of players of that calibre, especially to a rival code (which would do away with RL at the first chance it got), is completely beyond me. I notice that several of the Aussie posters on there, who used to be scathing about SC skeptics, are now noticeably quiet on the subject.

One of the things we UK skeptics often get told is: "How many players of value have we in SL lost? - none!" I'm now wondering if that's because don't produce many who are that good. But as Father Ted mentioned in the TotalRL debate - the losses of Chris Ashton, George Ford and Owen Farrell - and maybe even Ian Thornley (though I wasn't as bothered about losing him) are hardly going to improve the British game.

But how ironic, if every time RL - either in Aus or in GB - produces an Inglis or an SBW, Rugby Union just nips in and says "thank you very much, this year we'll have him". I mean, what is the game striving for if it's happy to keep losing its crown jewels. How long will crowds continue to flock to our stadia, if each new hope for the future either goes to RU, or spends all his time being courted by RU with the eventual likelihood that he will go (like Eastmond)?

Well said cruncher I think the salary cap needs lifting we are paying these guys pittance compared to other sports Rooney earns in a week what a good superleague player earns in a year which is disgusting I think £2million isn't alot to have our cap at . The salary cap has been the same for a good few years now so think it's time for a change and for all the clubs who can't keep up they will have to push the clubs harder to get extra funds.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the cap needs lifting. I don't think that will ever happen until we suffer a genuine calamity because of it (like losing several marquee players in one go). But it needs to be moderated in some imaginative and constructive way.

It's no good people keeping saying "there's been no exodus". There doesn't need to be an exodus for us to be damaged, and the loss of Inglis would be a truly massive blow, especially as he wasn't one - like Gasnier or SBW - who deliberately went looking for more money in Union.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: doing nothing is not an option.

Football is a much bigger sport, has access to incomparable sums of money and it's STILL on it's .

Let's just keep the League clubs afloat before we start worrying about signing Inglis.

The reason people are saying which quality players have been nicked at the minute is because RU is starting to scout the players at a much earlier age, i.e. Farrell, Ashton, Thornley etc.

Thornley doesn't seem a massive loss atm as he's not had chance to develop into a first team player yet.

The more I see Ashton now the more a loss I think it is (although I'm not having a go at Wigan for not caving into his demands - if true). He's big, strong and very quick and would have walked into the England side ahead of any of our backs.

My main gripe with the current cap is that it doesn't change with inflation, how many years is it now since the level was raised? This effectively means RL players are having to be paid less to do the same job.
