Took my wife to see RED tonight. Only £2.95 each - even with drink & popcorn was less than a tenner!

A real bargain, particularly as there seemed to be nothing else of any importance going on in Wigan tonight.

How come it was so cheap?

[iWigan Borough Council has approved a Hodder + Partners’ £200 million scheme to redevelop the town centre

The project, which is backed by Maryland Securities, will transform a 15-acre site in Eckersley, around Wigan pier.

The work will include the creation of a new mixed-use urban village containing 300 homes, commercial and cultural facilities, a new hotel, cafés and restaurants.

Maryland, which is based in Cheadle, said the 92,903m² site would maintain and respect the heritage of the Eckersley Mills area.

The Prince’s Regeneration Trust and CABE supported the plans, which took three years’ worth of consultation with the local council.

Maryland managing director Jacob Jebreel said the firm was delighted to receive the planning approval and support from a wide range of groups.

He said the project would have significant economic benefits for Wigan and the surrounding region.

My uni society went there this week, I managed to have 50, another guy got 61 and only stopped because we'd been there nearly 4 hours and they wanted us out.

I hope not, I had the ten bob bits for days the last time I went there!

I hope they are not knocking down the mills, I think they are fasntastic buildings that would look great if renevated.

Shocking buildings, should have been knocked down years ago, would get the traffic moving too. Plus it would take a monumental effort to bring them upto todays regs.

As far as im aware, they are not listed, so would need to be fully restored to todays standards. Wouldnt like that job!
