The BBC aren't interested in our game, its ran by rah rah lovers and they expect everyone else to love it too. '"
I disagree. The RFL had a great relationship with the BBC but went for the cash. Super League is always going to be a pay tv sport but they didn't and shouldn't have sold test match rights to Sky. I keep arguing and I do believe it that selling home tests to Sky has harmed our sport.
You say they are not interested but yet for the 2006 tri nations and 2008 world cup they sent a whole crew out to broadcast from Australia despite only having rights to do a highlights show. If they wern't interested they wouldn't have done that and produced it all from London.
Likewise if the BBC wern't interested they wouldn't have bothered to cover France v Australia from Paris with a full studio crew at the venue. They've also took the Challenge Cup out to France twice.
Why is Rugby Union so well supported? I agree about press bias but they do themselves every favour by having tests Live on Free Air, in particular the six nations. They are just getting out to more viewers.
You only have to compare the viewing figures
England v France (Sky): 155,000
Australia v NZ (Sky): 206,000
England v Australia (BBC): 1,400,000
France v New Zealand (Sky): 56,000
France v Australia (BBC): 1,000,000
England v NZ (Sky): No figure available yet.
The figures say it all. 9 times more viewers saw England v Australia than England v France and that's going to be similar when we play in Saturday's final. Thus union tests are being seen by at least 9 times (maybe even double or triple that!) more viewers than league tests. That's been happening for the past 15 years.
One test a year on the BBC is fine but a waste of time if the final is on sky.
We need tests back on the BBC Live and maybe then we will get more press coverage. We as a sport only have ourselves to blame I feel. The RFL gave too much to Sky Sports.
