| As for maguire I'm just glad it's out in the open and we can all kick on. He's been awesome but has bread a no excuse culture and that must carry on. Him leaving opens up an opportunity for somebody else(wane) and he'll take it. I'm sure maguire will go out on a high and leave us in a fantastic position to kick on.

| Quote ="AJ"Agreed, one more year in SL would have done that and he would still have had his pick of the NRL. All his talk about being happy as long as we improved seems quite fanciful now doesnt it.
I understand his decision on one hand, but lets be honest, he's been focused on this all season, this deal hasnt just happened. Thats what I find hard to stomach.'"
Same here. It didn't happen overnight so after a very short time with us he was negotiating his future elsewhere. His contract here wasn't a life sentence and if he'd stuck it out he could have gone back to the NRL easy enough integrity in tact. Not now, no time for lightweights who behave like that. He can leave tomorrow for me as his future focus will be Souths and what happens with them in 2012.

| Quote ="Dave26"Confirmed what I think we all expected after the speculation over the last couple of weeks. He was never going to stay more than three years anyway, so it's not a disaster. I think it was the best thing for the club, Maguire and the fans to get the announcement out in the open. Hopefully the team can use this as extra motivation for the rest of the season.
I just hope that a section of our fans don't decide to give Maguire stick for leaving, or blame him for any downturn in form/performances. He came in and turned our peformances round, winning us the Championship. He's proven himself as a head coach now and the South Sydney head coaches job is definitely a step up, I wish him all the best for the future!'"
Spot on, really hope people dont hold this against him. We got at the time someone who was regarded as the next big thing in the NRL it was always going to be short term. Some things in life are just too good to turn down and i really do think that Maguire himself would have prefered this chance to coach the bunnies come around next yr but these things happen.
He will be leaving the club in a strong position with at least 1 trophy to show for his time here. Anyone who says that he is wrong for leaving with 1 yr left is deluded and needs to open there eyes to the real world.

| I fully expect Hoffman to go to Souths with him, Richards needs to be signed up ASAP and thankfully all our kids are under long term deals.
Lets be honest though, this decision being announced only opens up the real rumour mill. Wane, Edwards, Sheens, Elliot, Taylor, Folkes etc etc.

| We have to bear in mind that he achieved far more in year one than anyone thought.
If he manages to retain the title this year, and possibly the CC, what more would there be for him?
Even if he stayed for a third year he would be trying to set something up or his return to Aus - so DaveO's point is not valid IMO.

Well in that case, I class Maguire just the same as all the other Aussies who come over here and have no respect whatsoever for their contractual obligations. As soon as a better offer comes along or they don't like the weather, they bugger off.
On one hand, if they don't want to be here then they can leave, but I don't see why we should put up with their whims, and just capitulate to their demands when they decide they've got a better offer elsewhere. Where's Lenegan's backbone?

| Madge had a big reputation within the NRL before he came here, it appears his exceptional first season has accelerated his chance of a head coach job in the NRL.
Whilst Wigan are the biggest name in club rugby sadly Super League cannot compete with the NRL.
The chance to steer the Bunnies to a Premiership is just too big an opportunity to turn down. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being naive.

IL speaks:
Quote Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan admitted it was never an option to deny Maguire permission to return to the NRL.
"The first we knew of it was Michael talking to us about the possibility 10 days ago and I asked him to keep me informed," he said.
"There was no question of releasing him and it's not at all acrimonious. We rate Michael highly and we get on with him well.
"We understand he wishes to go back to Australia and we would not stand in his way. We're looking forward, now the news is out, to having a good season."'"
So we still dont really know if it was a clause or not.

| You have to respect that he wants to go home, but i believe
he must have been talking to Souths, when he went home for a break.
Thats the only thing that disappoints me.
It seems to me he has grabbed the 1st nrl job to come his way, which tells me he just wants out and home anyway.

No, and to be fair, MM's personal terms are nothing to do with us. And I do understand IL's position that if someone wants to leave then why stand in their way, especially if it means you're not going to get 100% from that person.
But surely professional sport is about honouring your commitments and giving 100% whilst you're there? It's not a good example to set, is it?

| Sheens hasn't signed his deal with the Tigers yet, I'd go for him for a couple of years then hand the reins over to Waney.
Didn't Madge serve 5 years as an assistant before taking the Wigan job. Ensure Waney completes his apprenticeship before throwing him into the top job.
When Waney does take the top job we want to ensure it's a long and successful time at Wigan.

| Feel a bit let down tbh, i thought MM had a little more integrity but i suppose he has been offered a top NRL job on top money near home and that would be hard to refuse. I just hope he can now get his head sorted on the current season to get up both cups and that he makes his mark in the NRL and maybe eventually either Origin or Aussie coach.

I dont really see what thats got to do with it, alot of those coaches were wrongly sacked and most on here would admit that.
The only coach we have parted company properly with since Monie left the first time was Noble.

| Everyone looking for someone to blame.
But for me it's one if those situations where it's probably just right for everyone.
Is it really much different if he goes at the end of this season or next? We were always going to have to appoint a new coach at some point.

Exactly. Never understood this type of mentality where fans expect players & coaches to be 100% loyal, end of the day a majority of the time the only ones who are 100% loyal to a specific club are us, the supporters.
The sooner some people get it into their heads that for players & coaches it's a career and can be a short one at times too.
I don't begrudge someone grabbing an opportunity when it's available, Madge has given us plenty of time to prepare so let's be grateful of that.

It's valid because if he stayed for three years the club would fully expect to be negotiating with him at that time to extend his contract or having spoken to him realised it needed to find a new coach. There is a big difference between things happening when you plan then to and someone throwing a spanner in the works of your master plan after so short as time. It may well have been the plan all along that Wane took over after Madge had done his three years. Now we have the debate has he served a long enough apprenticeship after only a year and a bit as assistant. Madge leaving early did not figure in IL's plans that you can bet on. After so short a stint there is every chance his ethos will leave with him without it having been ingrained on the club.

Typical narrow minded view dont u think?
So just because he is leaving all his hard work and commitment that he has given to Wigan counts for nothing? Yes u can look at it that he has used Wigan to put himself in the shop window but do u honestly think that was all he cared about whilst he was head coach of Wigan?
Life is about bettering yourself and taking on challenges, y is sport seen different than normal work life. People change companies all the time for things such as money, opportunities etc.
He is an employee not a fan and the end of the day its a job for him!!
