As a Wiganer i thoroughly agree with this post.
Just to add to this the Wigan scholarship at the time wasnt the best and the club wasnt exactly wanting to make the players welcome into the set up, and this resulted in a few leaving to go to Saints etc.
Thankfully leneghan has taken over cleared out a lot of the dross and set up what seems to be a very good scholarship program
Good luck Ben hope this is one of many 1st team appearances !

| Quote: Finsbury Wire "I know it's very easy for other clubs fans to slate Warrington's youth policy. Certainly in the past it has left a lot to be desired, and hasn't been to the level of Wigan, Saints or Leeds. However, the past few years it has really taken strides to improve, and we are seeing the benifits. Players like Riley, Harrison, Cooper, Evans and Williams all having plenty of appearances now having come through our academy along with players like O'Brien, Dwyer, Currie (with more waiting for a chance) starting out their careers.
It's ridiculous to expect a poor youth system to churn our ten 18 year olds over night. But certainly Warrington has made the right steps and is now getting its rewards.
With regards to clubs signing prospects off of eachother, this will always happen between all clubs. The motivation behind moving from one to another could be money, playing opportunities, set up at the new club and more. Very few of us will know the real reason but good luck to all of them.
Finally, in respect to the comments on sugar daddies/owners. As far as I aware, Warrington is now a profitable business. Whilst I appreciate that Moran may fund things like the transfer fee of Myler, the club can run at full cap on less season tickets than it currently sells now. I believe a lot of this is down to things such as the hospitality facilities etc. If Moran pulled out tomorrow, Warrington would carry on. I understand that Moran's intention has always been to support the club for as long as possible but should he leave, it would service itself.
When we see clubs like Bradford, Wakey, HKR, London and many more struggling and being poorly run, Teams like Warrington and indeed Wigan should be applauded for the way they are intelligently run. I see no way to criticise the running of either club.'"
I have no problem with a young player weighing up his options, the number of lads that have their dreams shattered by the clubs is greater than the ones who get a successful career out of the game. It does seem strange that the clubs who are struggling are not trying to poach the quality scholarship and academy players. It must be cheaper to sign a O'Brien, Dwyer, Currie than a Tim Smith.

| It is all very well for Warrington to sign these players from other towns but Warrington seriously need to strengthen amateur and youth Rugby in their own town to produce their own Warrington born and bred youngsters. Warrington have traditionally produced very few youngsters and we need places like that producing their own for the good of England RL.

Can you explain how Warrington can create/force greater participation of Amateur RL?

I am sure that the recent CC wins will have provided an inspiration to the young kids in the area. The more success the Wire have the more kids will want to play the game. Its not forcing participation its nurturing it.

I agree with this, but I would imagine that if a team such as Warrington, Wigan, Saints or Leeds are in the hunt for a top youngster, the top youngster would prefer to be at one of the top clubs that (no disrespect intended) a Wakey or a Salford.
Then, with the big clubs taking on the best young talent, the smaller clubs have to either take a punt on a ready to go aussie that will do a job but no more, or an average youngster who is unproven and may not make the grade.

Logically yes, but there are a lot of players who dont get picked up by the big clubs and are left to the Salfords etc and have been developed into very good players indeed.
Also remember it is only since Leneghan took over at Wigan that we have had the focus returned to developing the youngsters again, Noble wasnt exactly promoting youth at the club on the scale we are seeing now as he wanted the readymade article from here, OZ / NZ / KOLPAK
At the time Ben was at Wigan i would say Wigan/Foley where very complacent and were just relying on the name of the club to be ultimate selling point, sorry but those days had gone and wasnt the major draw anymore.
I think the club have learned a very big lesson and IL has recognised this big time

IL has been at the club for four years. He knew about Currie but got fed up with him asking for more and said that was Wigans final offer. Currie has only been at Warrington since July/August 2010.
He is a very good prospect, no doubt, who took the best offer, no drama.

The first is sustainable, the second is subject to having the plug pulled at a moment's notice.'"
Warrington have made a profit in each of the last two financial years without any additional finance from SM. we own our stadium so pay no rent, commercial activities, sponsorship.. Things are good and self sufficient. Please get facts correct before spouting rubbish.

warrington are addressing this problem with the warrington & cheshire service area squads , and as for amateur there is 6 or 7 amateur teams with plenty of youth teams at all ages , also superleague clubs have been picking warrington youth increasingly since scholarship begun
