Quote: bazdev "For me he is doing a great job. He is rebuilding the side whilst keeping us competing at the top of the table, which isn't easy to do at all. I would like to see him get a new 5 year deal. I have no doubt he will prove a top class coach and this might stop England poaching him when McNamara fails miserably in the world cup.

The downside would probably be Iestyn Harris moving elsewhere for a head coach role but I could live with that'"

Then you go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like I love you.

Quote: DaveO "That is an old fashioned and outdated approach. Coaches have to be almost a physcologist these days and Wane has alot to learn in that department IMO.

It's his job to get the best out of players and not look like a coach form the 70's. He doesn't have the luxery to speak his mind if it undermines players confidence and the critisism of Gelling was crass. There was plenty of poor play v Wakefield's 12 men including the shoddy defense down the middle that led to two tries so to say that about Gelling given what else happened in that game was out of order IMO. Just no need for it.'"

How do you know that the criticism of Gelling wasn't psychological?

People respond to different triggers.

Gelling might be the type of player that needs to be publicly embarrassed to up his game. Others will need an arm round the shoulder.

That said, I've never met any of our players so I couldn't comment on their personality types.

Me too but I suppose I should have added 'the majoritys expectations' in that statement.

The bloke loves the club and as much as he'll make mistakes along the way that's a great base from which to work. If we fail it won't be for the want of trying.

A new deal must be close.

Wane's right up there with the best in super league. How anyone could claim otherwise is completely beyond me.

Unfortunately there are a small number of people on this board with a hidden agenda to publically discredit Shaun Wane at any given opportunity due to them being 'in the know' relating to some certain incidents throughout our recent past.

Obviously it's become apparent that the team (and it's chairman) have lost confidence in Mr Wane that we are now languishing at the bottom of SL and the club is in tatters.

Is it not about expectation? The expectation of our owner is that we should win either a CC or a SL GF. Anything less will be demed unacceptable by our owner. Such high expectations are 'The Wigan Way' Shaun Wane and the players understand those expectations and 'The Wigan Way'. Many Wigan 'supporters' posting in this thread do not share the expectations of our owner, Shaun Wane, the players and real Wigan supporters.

No, his expectation (IL) is that Wigan compete/make a Challenge Cup Final/Superleague Final. His ambition is to win them (from his address to the shareholders)

BUT

In the past we've employed coaches who'd achieved success prior to taking the Wigan job but all failed to see some of the results/progress that Wane has.

He's earned a shot and letting him have a sustained period of say 2, 3 or 4 full seasons isn't going away from the mythical Wigan way. That being said if we don't win anything in that period of time then it's time to find a new guy.

All this does, IMO, prove how good Madge was and how lucky we were to get him.

If that is the case then clearly we did not meet those expectations and they are a bar far higher than the vast majority here are prepared to accept. Not doubting the address BTW but Shaun Wane / Players must have received a very different expectations. One they are happy to share. I daresay greats like Edwards, Gregory and Hanley and many more had identically high expectations. The true 'Wigan Way'.

It all depends on the standards being attained prior to an appointment. Shaun Wane came into a Wigan RLFC that was successful and delivering competition victories. Shaun Wane was part of that success and received the best apprenticeship money can buy. If Shaun Wane achieves anything less then Wigan RLFC has declined under his watch.

Some coaches were very successful but lost their position for various reasons, sometimes harshly (Dorahay / West). Other coaches came at a time when the standards being achieved were relatively poor and they were sometimes not given time or given time (Brian Noble for example) but lost their position for not achieving the expectation.

Wigan RLFC was built on high expectations. Several here have low expectations of the club and denounce anybody with high expectations that reflect the 'Wigan Way'

Wane did a superb job in his first season. His expectations are, and should be higher this season. He doesn't suffer fools or slackers and all the players know who the boss is. He could (and IMO should) be little more humane, but he does seek advice from his "senior team"

I hope it works for him, because he is under no illusion of the expectations from above. He's in an entirely different position to Noble when he came to Wigan in that Noble had a remit to consolidate and then rebuild. Wane knows that he has to reach finals.

I'm sure people like Lockers & Richards have the drive for success that the previous greats did.

I'm also positive guys like Tomkins and Farrell are driven to be the best also.

For all his faults I'd also never doubt Wane's desire to win. If anything he's a little OTT with it sometimes and forgets the prize is won in October.
