| Quote: Cruncher "Moran is good for RL. As you say, we need more like him.
It's an indication of a certain RL mindset that some fans - particularly in the Bradford area at present - are now talking bitterly about 'sugar daddies'. It irritates me, that term. It's nearly always used in derogatory fashion, and yet in most cases you could easily replace it with 'smart owner' or 'CEO with business acumen'.
The Salary Cap doesn't allow massive spending on players any more, so the so-called sugar daddies in the game can't behave like sugar daddies even if they were inclined to. They work within the existing financial framework to produce the best and most viable clubs that they can, something Bradford clearly haven't had a clue about.
The sad truth, though, is that there are still far too many people in the game who regard these savy indivduals - Lenagan, Moran, McManus etc - as some kind of unfair advantage over the rest. The mind boggles that such an attitude persists when you consider the challenges the game is facing in the 21st century.'"
Yes and no...there's a big difference between a smart owner (like Lenagan) who sets the club up to run as a self-sustaining business, and one who is content with making up continuing losses from his own pocket. The first is sustainable, the second is subject to having the plug pulled at a moment's notice.

| I can understand why youngsters would go to Wire at the minute as they will get opportunities going forward in their first team as guys like Hodgson, Briers, Morley, Monagahan, Solomona and quite a few others are on the wrong side of 30 and don't have a vast amount of years left.
Wire have the money to still attract big name imports and English based players but that could prove more difficult going forward then just throwing money at them. The NRL salary cap going up will mean they will tie their best players up for long periods and English sides seems to be waking up to the need to get their best players tied to long term deals.
Guys like O'Brien, Currie, Dwyer and Evans are good young players and will need to be to step in to these high profile shoes.

| As far as i am concerned any young player who leaves Wigan is pretty misinformed. Wigan have shown a commitment to getting the most talented youngsters into the first team.guys like Tomkins (sam and joel), Goulding, Farrell, Charnley and many more over the past few years have been handed first team chances.
In the last couple of years especially we have learnt how to deal with getting these players involved (Joel and Goulding had a rough ride into the firsts but Faz, Sam and Charnley have had the best possible treatment)
If the young man feels his best chance is to leave Wigan, good luck to him, but evidence shows he left the best club to progress into the first team.

| Doesn't Currie play in the back row? It doesn't surprise me that some back row forwards have opted to move from Wigan given the competition that the club has had in that position for quite a while. Danny Bridge moved to Wire too while Jon Molloy and Matty Sarsfield went to Huddersfield mainly because their chances would always be limited at Wigan with the likes of Farrell, Tuson and Hughes ahead in the pecking order and with Hansen (and Joel Tomkins at the time) still having many years left to play.

I'm not sure that the Wire fans have been educated yet in the art of giving young guys a chance and tolerating their mistakes for the greater good. Let's face it their track record to date - and I know that they have a lot of promising kids but at the moment that's all they are - is unproven. Those fans I know still expect to replace the above with ready made stars.

| Quote: Paul Youane "Some amazing in-depth knowledge of the "going-ons" within the Warrington club by the usual suspects. At the end of the day Warrington successfully secured a target player at the end of the scholarship period. It happens, Joe Mellor one that went the other way whilst Wigan out-bid Warrington for a couple of players this year (including one from Wakefield I believe - will he be classed as an ex-Wakefield player in the way Currie is being classed as an ex-Wigan player?) and Bradford out-bid Warrington and others for Bateman. I presuming that the "bonus" Warrington offered these players weren't enough or maybe that "bonus" never existed at all.
As for Moran losing interest then I would suggest that given he is the youngest owner, has been a season ticket holder, attending home and away games, for approaching 40 years and also just about the only owner who regularly attends academy fixtures then I would suggest every other club in Super League has considerably more reason to worry about potentially losing their backing than Warrington do.'"
Hampshire was never going to Warrington, despite Wire sending an ex Wakefield second row/centre to see him.
And he played for Hull U15's

| I know it's very easy for other clubs fans to slate Warrington's youth policy. Certainly in the past it has left a lot to be desired, and hasn't been to the level of Wigan, Saints or Leeds. However, the past few years it has really taken strides to improve, and we are seeing the benifits. Players like Riley, Harrison, Cooper, Evans and Williams all having plenty of appearances now having come through our academy along with players like O'Brien, Dwyer, Currie (with more waiting for a chance) starting out their careers.
It's ridiculous to expect a poor youth system to churn our ten 18 year olds over night. But certainly Warrington has made the right steps and is now getting its rewards.
With regards to clubs signing prospects off of eachother, this will always happen between all clubs. The motivation behind moving from one to another could be money, playing opportunities, set up at the new club and more. Very few of us will know the real reason but good luck to all of them.
Finally, in respect to the comments on sugar daddies/owners. As far as I aware, Warrington is now a profitable business. Whilst I appreciate that Moran may fund things like the transfer fee of Myler, the club can run at full cap on less season tickets than it currently sells now. I believe a lot of this is down to things such as the hospitality facilities etc. If Moran pulled out tomorrow, Warrington would carry on. I understand that Moran's intention has always been to support the club for as long as possible but should he leave, it would service itself.
When we see clubs like Bradford, Wakey, HKR, London and many more struggling and being poorly run, Teams like Warrington and indeed Wigan should be applauded for the way they are intelligently run. I see no way to criticise the running of either club.

| I've just deleted three posts that wanted to turn what is an interesting topic about youth products and systems into the usual Wigan/Wire peeing comp. Please don't post anymore.
