| Quote Cruncher="Cruncher"This is all about assumptions, Dave.
You're right, we can happily chat about it, but as all the viewpoints being expressed at present, mine included, are based on things we 'think' or 'assume', then it's a bit of a pointless exercise.'"
Some are assumptions, most are opinion reached by looking at it in what I think is a realistic manner. For example do you disagree it is more risky to sign a different player who you might class as a "solid pro" rather than re-sign Carmont who's capabilities are well known? I think what has gone on in the past in this regard makes my opinion quite reasonable.
Given IL has said numerous times we won't sign anyone for next season should I say instead of it being the [imost likely[/i scenario we won't be signing anyone, that we simply [iwon't [/ibe signing anyone? If I did you would be telling me that isn't a given.
Same goes with resigning Bailey. Wane did say he had a new contract so perhaps I should have said I didn't think Maguire would be keen on retaining bailey either but we [ihave done so[/i (as opposed to seemingly have done so).
Why is it an assumption Carmont has not got a chronic injury when there is no evidence he has?
When I say I don't think we have a squad that allows a coach to be ruthless with older players, do you think we do?
It's like treading on eggs shells here at times because we never can deal with absolutes so if you phrase your post accordingly they are classed as assumptions and the whole debate is classed as pointless.
Quote CruncherFor what it's worth, I'd agree that George Carmont has been Ian Lenagan's best signing by some measure, and that we'd be lucky to get someone better unless we were prepared to pay a lot of money.[/quore
Is that an assumption on your part?

Quote Cruncher But we still don't know what the state of play is re. wages and proposed wage increases among the juniors, or what Mike Maguire might be planning to do with the wage bill once he's arrived.'" '"
We will no doubt see what happens in due course so it will be interesting to see just what deal he gets (if he gets one) and what is said if he does not.
In the meantime the debate is should he get a deal and of what length so all the reasons for or against him getting a deal will get dragged up such as our squad depth, his likely wage and so on.

| Quote Father Ted="Father Ted"We have four SL centres on the payroll, Gleeson, Carmont, Goulding & Pryce. All have played a considerable amount of SL.
We also have two reserve lads in Thornley & Marsh who may deserve and get a run out next season.

I thought Pryce was a winger. If Carmont goes that leaves us with Goulding and Gleeson in the centres and if either is injured forced to play the two juniors rather than give them a gradual introduction.
Quote Father TedThe club may well feel that a one year deal for George is generous under the financial situation the club is in and also the amount available under the salary cap given that some positions are desperate for strengthening.
As good as George is perhaps it's time Goulding and Pryce were made to show what they can or can't do next year. If they can they stay, if they can't then they could well depart.'"
What do you mean by "under the financial situation the club is in "? IL said on the radio we pay to the cap limit so it's all about who gets what slice of that pie isn't it?
As to it being time for Goulding and Pryce to show if they can or can't next year, what if they can't? With George gone we would be a bit stuffed.
The ideal would have been George for one more season but somehow we have ended up with a situation where it seems its two years or none.

Pryce is a centre and this is where I hope to see him used in years to come although he can play on the wing also obviously. In my opinion the Pryce is most likely to take over from Carmont if we keep him for 1 more year.
If we do not I can see Bailey being the easy option if Pryce/Goulding are not performing to the required level, or a new man being brought in altogether.

It seems that's exactly what the choice is two years or none, and I would say that the club and most of the fans are in agreement that a one year deal would be best but that's now not going to happen.
It's a case of weighing up the pro's and con's of both a 2 year deal or no deal and deciding which is best for Wigan, and I say no deal we shouldn't be held ransom by a player particularly when we have younger guy's who will soon be requiring first team rugby.

there is no chance in hell that we would sell him to anybody - unless he publicly came out and put in a transfer request. Even then, you would be looking at close to £1m to force the reluctant sale.
It would be complete commercial insanity for Saints to even consider it for a second, never mind go through with it.

| lengthy article in league weekly about Noble's shopping list. Apparantly celtic have as good as signed matt utai, Carmont has been offered a two year deal by them, Noble wants Feka and also Reardon. as well as Winterstein, Thackray and i think Matty Lee. Will be intersting to see who they get and which of our lot follow him down there. No mention in the article of fielden going !!! I think im more nervous about who we'll lose rather than who we'll sign ( if anybody )

Do people really need to see more of Goulding and Pryce to be able to make a judgement on whether they can cut it?
If that's the alternative I'll fund a two year contract for Carmont out of my own pocket.

| Goulding and Pryce would have one more season to show if they can do it. If neither can then another player will be brought in I'm sure. If they can both hack it then the club is in a very good position indeed.
As for Graham, would he pass IL's due dilligence test?
He might leave Saints. Graham will not want to go but he could be sold!
That would be a real test, Graham says he'll see his contract out and Saints need to sell.

| Feka needs to be kept no doubts about it.
I'd seriously question the intelligence of any club, coach or owner who sold a player as devastating as Feka.
It's simple we lose Feka we lose any go forward we had in the pack.
Get him on a strict regime and he'll be the best impact prop in world RL

| I can see Bailey moving into the centres next season, he is a steady pair of hands defensively and can pass a ball, plus with the likes of Joel, Mossop, Farrell we've plenty of cover in the 2nd row.
I do wonder whether Maguire has some inside information regarding the Storm pack, Johnson is already going to Catalans (supposedly) and if rumours about Watmough are to be believed I wonder if Melbourne are wanting rid of a couple of props. Think Lima and A.N.Other were mentioned on one of the Aussie sites last week. Hence why we're keen to free up space on the cap.
TBH as great as George has been the last two years I think we could cope for a season without him, then if Pryce or Goulding aren't cut out for the job we can offload Bailey, Pryce (OOC next season?) and get in a big name centre (Lyon is also OOC next season is he not?).
One other option is Gasnier who is apparently out of favour at Stade Francais and from watching them play Bath yesterday had a right stinker! Obviously there would be a transfer fee involved but IL has shown he's willing to do it the hard way.
(If we could get Sonny Bill too we'd be laughing!)

SBW hasn't played club rugby this year i don't think?
He seems to have dropped of the face of the earth rugby wise especially as a lot more focus has been on the Touloun club as a certain MR Wilkinson is there.
He's one of those few players who could walk onto any team in both the NRL and SL and automatically be one of their star players.

Key point highlighted.
Feka needs to get himself fit and lose two stone. Going forward he is very good (although some games this season he has gone missing) but defensively he has been dire. Teams can pick him apart. Warrington in the semi-final being the best example. If you're half a yard ahead of Feka your away. I can see why he isn't picked to represent any team at the international level.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In terms of George Carmont it is a no brainer. Sign him up!

That's the key point Feka is unfit and is making big yards but yet he's majorly unfit! We need him 2 look like he did when he first signed as if he's making the yards now he'll be a major player for us when fit

I'm hoping to see the level of performances he showed at Salford.
Regardless of people opinions on him he has played some very good rugby in a Wigan shirt IMO he's just not consistent enough.
I'm actually praying Maguire will get that consistency out of him as he's not a bad player!
