Hanley compared to all but a handfull who've ever played the game: No contest. I think you're confusing 'legendary' with 'world class' there. The term 'world class' is surely reserved for those who are among the best in the world in their position at any time during their playing career. Richards certainly qualifies. |

Exactly. A World Class player doesnt even need to become a legend necessarily either. Sorry to use football here but people may understand it easier that way, Rooney is a World Class player but due to his attitude I doubt he will ever be a "legend" of the game. And no i am not likening Richards to Rooney Richards will definitely be a Wigan legend if not a legend of RL in general.

King - If he was one of the best centres/wingers in the world, why had Aus dropped him? Even if we assume aus had the best outside back at the time that still makes him the 3rd best centre and 3rd best winger. If you had Tate, Inglis, Kenny-Dowall, Folau, Vatuvei and Richards at your disposal would you give him a run?
Ellis - Good value for money I'm sure and a very good player but he doesn't seem to be able to turn it on at international level unlike Thaiday, Lockers, Burgess and Gallen who I would call world class.
Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go at these guys, they both tear it up in the league but I think they're both a little short of world class. Out of interest who would you rate as the best 17 in the world right now? I'd say:

Always played well at international level, makes a ton of tackles, good metres going forward, brilliant passing game, leadership qualities, good discipline, plays 80 minutes, other than a kicking game what more do you want from a back rower? What 3 starters and 1 bench player would you have ahead of him?

at the time for me he was better than Tate and probably still is. Kenny Dowall wasnt available then and Falou and Inglis still youngsters.

Sam Burgess, Greg Bird, Paul Gallen, Sam Thaiday, Anthony Watmough, Luke Lewis etc etc . . . . .
I'm one of SoL's biggest fans and he has always performed well for GB when selected in his proper position.
If World Class means able to hold your own, we have lots in GB - including SoL. If it means you'd make a world XVII then we don't have very many at all and SoL isn't one of them IMO. |
