Roby was woeful at times during that game. Pity Mr Ganson didn't "have a word" with him at half time like he did last week when Saints were losing at Wakefield.

Crowd got very angry just before half time. He kept telling Les Cats to stay onside after they hand wandered offside but if he gave two penalties against them for offside I'd be surprised.

I thought that Bowen was living dangerously a little on a couple of occasions, collecting the ball and throwing long flat passes out five metres from our own line. One in particular was pretty high and Burgess had to jump for it. Not really needed, especially in the wet weather! A definite head in hands moment for the crowd there...and he did it a couple of weeks back too!

I think I know which one you mean. In the first half?

He got a lot of slagging off from some around me for running at the corner on an attack to the left also in the first half and passing the ball to winger with no room left.

Now OK he should probably have held onto the ball but I am certain he was expecting either the winger or centre to run an angle on the inside - not follow him left!

It would be harsh for Bowen to be blamed for conceding the 6 points. In that rain the ball would have been like a bar of soap. It's a bit like the goalkeeper issue in football - no one takes much issue when an outfield player messes up but if a goalkeeper makes one mistake they get slaughtered for it.
Bowen has more of an excuse for losing the ball than Farrell does as it's hard to protect the ball when you're trying to catch it. Also in that rain even if you have a good firm grip on the ball a good tackle can make the ball slip out and it was a good tackle.

The biggest fault in the build up to that try was a slow defence not putting any pressure on the kicker and allowing him to get as much height and distance as he wanted.

Quote: MattyB "Great try, however lets not ignore the fact he cost us six points fumbling under the high ball though.......
He deffo caught it, as he was tackled and hit the ground the ball spilled out.
There were numerous players in front of the kicker but not sure if any of them were involved in the tackle (or within the 10) when he caught it although my impression is they were.

There's 1 idiot sat behind us (same bloke who slagged Riddell for 2 years) who called him " a f#####g coward" 2 weeks ago and was at it again last night from the 1st minute!
I agree he shouldn't have thrown the ball to Burgess in the 1st half but nothing wrong with anything else IMO with regards to kick return and collecting the high ball.
I think I remember DaveO saying he had a good game for his debut against Hudds? I agreed and WCC apart I think he's been pretty good and getting better each week.
There were half a dozen tanked up at H/T wanting to send the "useless lazy blah blah blah" home. To be honest rather than it wind me up I just laugh at them.

Same as I did last night after the initial euphoria of the try, I just turned around and looked at him and laughed! icon_biggrin.gif

PS
At 10-0 (IIRC) he pulled off a try saving tackle near the corner of the west/south stand. As soon as he did it I said that could win us the game!
I don't want that piece of effort/skill to go unnoticed.

There were some muppets sat near me who we're slagging him off for passing it to a forward after catching a dropout from Cats. I mean seriously some people need to get a grip, when do,you ever really see a fullback catch a dropout and not pass to a forward. Same issue with his passing to burgess on the kick return, tomkins only ever ran a kick return back if he really had no other option, otherwise he's pass to charnley/richards every time. The double standards people have is ridiculous with regards to new players, it's like some people want him to fail.
I thought he had a really good game last night and ultimately won us the match.

Also, not for this threat really but some fans need to learn the rules instead of shouting at the ref all the time. Roby didn't have a great game, but some of the calls our fans were making about decisions were quite frankly. Embarrassing.

I think some people like to shoot their mouths off at a game, or in a forum such as this because they can't get an audience away from such anonymous places.. The early season criticism of Bowen was quite frankly embarrassing, but to be expected. Any Fb could have lost that ball, which was a terrific pressure kick, not many players could have sent the dummies he did... Some posters need to get a sense of perspective.

Thought he was man of the match for us last night even before the winning try. Was our only player who looked threatening in attack which concerns me a little from a team perspective but think on an individual basis Bowen just gets better every week.
