| Quote: WQrriors "Upmost respect for wire, but seeing him rip up the defence like that was the highlight of this year.Talk about bouncing up and down in my chair!
Outstanding. as good as sean edwards for me. When sean edwards had the ball, the stadium errupted, as it does with sam, Shows how good he is to me. take a bow son.
Funnily enough, I've just put the game on again and watched that try. Sam's in danger of becoming an all-time great even at his tender years.
But - a different player to Edwards. Edwards was a lethal support player and distributor. He could back up on a halfpence and spot the tiniest gap in the defence to put his runners through. He was also a great motivator. There have been better ball players and runners, but Edwards definitely had the 'X' factor.
Sam is undoubtedly in a higher skills bracket - his evasive running is out of this world, his hands and kicking are outstanding and getting better and better every week. His only weakness for me is the tendency to try and step on every run. A good dummy & step is more effective when the opposition don't expect it, and at the moment they know he's likely to go himself. But right now he's simply awesome and getting better.
I've seen more comments saying "I don't like Wigan or Tomkins but he's special to watch" today than ever. That says something.

| Quote: giwildgo "Sam can only beat what is in front of him. Put him in any NRL side, give him a few seasons to adapt and barring injury he'd be a match for any current Aussie player. No disrespect to the names mentioned, but he's the type of instinctive natural talent that only comes around every 10 -15 years - I think its legimate to compare him with Slater when both were at the same stage of their careers (rather than like for like at present), given the additional potential Tomkins has. I just don't buy into this "because they are Aussie and in the NRL they are automatically better", its the same old British inferiority complex that has hampered us for years. We have and have had World Class players over the last twenty years, just not enough to fill a competitive international team.'"
I have no doubt tomkin will be one of the best players in the world for a long time. but I think a bit more of an open minded realistic view is needed.

Is me saying Tomkins isn't as good as Slater translate in your mind to me saying his second rate, is this is why you're so upset.
Why has this muppet been allowed to turn a thread about the try of the season by the best player in SL into a debate about whether he's better than Billy Slater.

I'd say I am open minded, I'm not denying the quality of the top Aussie players and the greater depth of those players that play in the NRL. However the talent is spread throughout the league and is not uniformly brilliant by any stretch. On a consistent match by match basis the NRL is more intense than SL, but the concentration of quality player in the Wigan and Warrington teams is at least equal to 75% of the NRL sides. If Tomkins can rip it up again ex Internationals, ex SoO players and squad fillers in the Warrington side, he could undoubtedly do the same against average NRL sides with the odd International, SoO rep and abundant squad fillers.
