In light of this news, I hope I don't come across as hasty, but do we need to do more for players that leave the game? Terry Newton did a very silly thing, but did he deserve banishment from the game altogether? I don't wish to sound as though I'm looking for someone to blame, but could the RFL not have worked with Terry Newton to go round clubs and discuss this issue and try to discourage any players that might have been taking it?
Leaving RL must be pretty devastating for some players. Some will take it much harder than others. Being taken out of that day-to-day environment, with your closest friends, with little employment prospects at a relatively young age must/is difficult to take. IIRC didn't Kris Radlinski admit that he suffered from depression when he retired from the game? I bet he wasn't alone.
I hope the game does more for RL players after they leave the game. There was a little bit before the Huddersfield/Saints game about Jon Wilkin setting up a programme where some of the Saints players go on work experience - voluntary - in fields that they'd be interested in when they retire. More things need to be in place to help players find a line of work for when they retire. And even on some levels, just some professional help with getting over retirement from rugby league.'"
The RFL have come out and said something about they were talking to Terry about talking to kids about the whole taking drugs thing. Sure i read that on some news site today.
