Quote: jaybs "Many major RL Clubs do though, St Helens are proud to claim an average attendance of 11,000, take away the Wigan and Warrington supporters that travel to Knowsley Road for the derby games and Leeds fans and that average may be much closer to 9,000!'"
It is terrible business practice to rely on away fans. Wigan and Hull FC specifically target our games at theirs as a time to try to get more new fans into their grounds. This is the way forward. 2 of the top attendance averaging teams showing the rest of the league how it should be done.
I seem to remember boss hogg saying at a forum that quins were only going to target the big games........this is/was madness IMO. If you only try to attract fans NEW to the games , then target the ones where we have a chance of winning or it being a close game. It's not an exact science, but Salford, Catalans, Castleford (when we aren't hamstrung by the RFL naughty chair), HKR, Wakey, Hull FC, these are the games we should target.
Leeds, Wigan. Saints, Bradford...these are the teams with the traditionally bigger crowds in London. By all means promote them, but don't be stunned when we get 0% return.
Example.
St Helens average at the stoop is 5,277. Next year, does anyone want to hazzard a guess at the gate for this game. I'd say around the 4,500 mark. IF the club do have the marketing spend of the northern clubs, why pay money to market a game we know will be in the top 3 attendances of the season? Saints will always draw london based Saints fans....always has done and if the club want to spend money on this game, then FFS, try to identify these ex-pat fans and take down their contact details..AND F()CKING MARKET TO THEM!
Now...Salford. 2,682 average at the Stoop......and if you don't market it, it won't get any bigger than that. So market it, attract new fans to what should be a closer game than St Helens.....if we win, then the atmosphere in the Kings afterwards is better...more chance of repeat business.
I took a friend and his son to the Leeds game at Griffin park...the game we drew when botham kicked the conversion from the touchline (it gets further out every year...next year it will be from row c in the new road stand
)....my mate loved it, but to this day, curses me, because his son started nagging him about going back to watch league and lost all interest in his Fulham Season Ticket. This is not the norm and neither was the result of that game, but neither is it unique. But, to have a chance of getting that "first game buzz" going, you need to get people to games where it might happen....and I'd back a result/close game v Salford over Leeds/Wigan/Saints any day of the week.
