I agree its pre season but what I saw with my own eyes verses Skolars with regards to defence worried me. We were opened up by Skolars a good number of times, more than I had seen in previous capital games. The score yesterday would suggest there are grounds to be worried. For the record I don’t think we will be at the top of the league but at the same time defending the goal line is an important facet of the game.
You appear to play down pre season games as being completely insignificant.

That's an interesting interpretation of my post.
My own position is that you cannot judge how a season is going to go based on two pre-season games, particularly one against London Skolars that is used every year primarily as a marketing tool. I understand that people are excited about the season starting and want to get as much information as they can from people who watched the games but drawing concrete conclusions from them is a risky business.
I agree about the question marks over our defence - Lord knows we've gone through it enough on here - But lets give the team, with new faces and a new coach, enough time to get up and running in SL before judging them either way. Fans expectations need to be managed because we've undoubtedly got one of the weaker squads in SL.

| If there are question marks about the defence it's up to Powell to sort them out. Clearly he would have noted what happened at the Skolars' match and this will have be re-iterated to him against Leigh. He now has two weeks to address the defensive frailities.

| I don't know how big the lads are that you have still to come back but you were missing some size yesterday. A couple to soften us up in the middle and it could have been a totaly different score. Anyway all the best for the season.

| Quote: alanw "So what can we take out of this score until we hear from anyone who went to the game..
Ok from the score it was a close one. So do we worry that we couldnt steam roll them over and run up a big score. Or do we think a close run game like that is better for them. We mustnt forget that Leigh have had at least 2/3 more warm ups then us.
Myself i perfered the close one,for the simple reason if we do have defence problems in places then games like this that are close gives Powell more of a chance to see where are problems. And what certain areas in the defence that need to be work on before season starts.
Ok i can see if we had run riot then we could have had a chance to run some more plays. But as we dont get that many pre-season games then a good hard workout can only do them good instead of a walk in the park.
From looking at the scorers its good to see that the trys are coming from all the backs, so might show we are moving the ball out wide. We see what those who went have to say when they get back about that.
Only thing i dont get is and if HG is right, why leave out Bailey (unless he picked up a knock of course), if hes going to be one of our main players this season then imo he needs the game game to get use to the team and conditions here in the UK.
I popped over to the Leigh board to see if they had anything new to add, and according to one of their fans is take Dorn.Clubb and Wilkes out of the squad and then we dont have anything.
Go to Blip.tv and type in Leigh Centurions v Harlequins' watch the game and make your own mind up.

| Blip TV not good viewing and we still seem rather soft in defence down the wings and worse than last year.

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity
Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike
SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!:9005.jpg |

Certainly does. Kicking game still looks poor too.

| Nick the Greek dropped about 5 at Leigh and probably a similar number against Skolars. Powelly took him of at Leigh I noticed!
