not strictly true that's why Boris is working hard to get them on board.

TFL oversees SWT's operations serving Greater London stations, their timetables serving these stations are also approved by TFL and they receive a large amount in subsidy via TFL for providing services for unprofitable services. |

It does annoy me that you can't use a pay as you go Oyster on SWT - fortunately when travelling from home I get an all zones travel card included in the return journey from Maidstone to London. But if coming from Sheffield it makes more sense to buy a return to Twickenham from Victoria/Waterloo as the travel cards encompassing zone 5 are a rip off. |

trains don't make money anyway that's no big secret.
The Tube network runs at a loss every year believe it or not, TfL makes its money from the Bus network. It's why i never understood the private sector wanting to run the trains. |

South West Trains pays an annual fee of £119m for its franchise, instead of receiving subsidies, and I doubt they get much of it from rural Dorset. How much are we all paying to subsidise the Northern Rail Cup?

The RFL are also guilty of the short term fix , thats why they concentrate on the sponsorship/corporate angle
