Personally, I was originally coming from Waterloo, I'd head to Kew Bridge, cross the road to where the Plough used to be (Sainsbury's Metro IIRC) and jump the 267 to TW2. Added bonus of a part travel bevy in the Express Tavern...

How practical is it to catch the tube to Richmond and walk from there?

Nice walk down by the river, probably 30 mins or so. Also several buses go from Richmond station to Twickenham.
