RLWC2017 - England v. PNG Report

After yesterday’s shock win for Fiji over New Zealand and Lebanon pushing Tonga all the way to the final hooter, nerves would have been shredded in the England dressing room as they came up against a passionate and fanatically supported Papua New Guinea in the last quarter final.

PNG took an unbeaten record in the group stages to Melbourne along with a massive points difference bolstered by a 64-0 win over the USA last weekend.

England had Sam Burgess back in the line-up after two games out through injury and last weeks experiment of Gareth Widdop at full-back with Kevin Brown and Luke Gale in the halves was repeated by coach Wayne Bennett.

Got my ticket for Tonga vs England, me thinks I might be outnumbered due to the number of passionate Tongan supporters there are here in Auckland, A lot of Tickets had already gone when I went online at the end of the England PNG game

England should think about the partisan crowd third, with the Tongan team second behind the English overcoming themselves. Yes the win against PNG was achieved with relative ease, but the ball-handling errors, or rather the number of them, would be suicide against better opposition. Burgess, upon his much trumpeted return, was one of the main culprits. The first time Bongser has done a "throughy" with a day's work beckoning (it was a long one) for the best part of two decades was rewarded with that dross. Ta boys! Step it up for the semi or DP is shelling out fo' nowt.

On another issue, whilst Brown appeared to be compus mentis for the rest of the half and at the (brief and meaningless) HT pitchside interview, he should have been yanked after the head hit (and Floweresque follow up) as he was obviously sparko as the oppo teams handbagged over his prone body. Only pulling him at HT (Rodney Marsh, Alf Ramsey jokes aside) isn't the example that should be set in a showpiece WC match. If some head problem were (God forbid) to develop later, would the insurance company shell out under the circumstances? They are, after all, wrigglier than Phil "the rubber man" Ford. Not impressed.

Absolutely, the handling was shocking and the completion rate amateurish but I've already made a 24000 miles round trip this year to take in 2 Leigh games so a chance to see England 20 mins away from my house I wouldn't class as shelling out for nowt.

I was curious to witness that, in the light of Jamie Acton's much publicised (and dangerous) foul on Bird. To my mind, the PNG guy's follow through on a seemingly unconscious player, was just as dangerous - if not identical. The initial injury to Brown was caused by an unfortunate clash of heads, but what happened next doesn't even seem to have even been reviewed.

Completely different to Actons actions. What I find astounding is they required (not available at the time) video playback to see what injury has occurred! What sort of a doctors that?

As I said, "not identical" but, in my mind, just as dangerous - and unnecessary.

As for the medical "efforts", thank goodness for social media, and a non-playing member of the squad realising what had happened!

Yes as you said Alan "If not identical" icon_wink.gif .. Lots of technical rules have been ignored in the WC,but ignoring a players welfare both on and off the pitch is diabolical.

Bang on, Atomic. It's a roughty-toughty (rufty-tufty?) old game and that is part of its attraction for the spectator. However no genuine contact sports fan wants to see a bested combatant subjected to too much punishment (whilst we may admire their bravery) and possibly incur life changing (or ending) injuries.

Bongser recalls an heavyweight champ fight betwixt, he thinks (he is happy to be corrected if anyone recognises his nebulous description of the bout in question), Larry Holmes and Smokin' Joe's lad (Marlon? Marvis? Marvin ("Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to send an email to some dwork who's forgotten his password"icon_wink.gif?) Holmes battered his opponent into submission unto the point where Frazier Jnr was on the ropes being mainly supported by an extended left from Holmes, who repeatedly beckoned the idiot ref to stop the fight. Each time the ref "sat on his hands", Larry would put another, practically undefended, bomb into Frazier's head region and then beckon the ref again. This went through two or three repetitions and had Bongser screaming at the tele for the berk to stop the fight. Finally he did.

Frazier hadn't gone down. Guts! Brown got up and played on. Guts! Laudable from the pair of them. Sometimes, however, gutsy b'stards need protecting from themselves.

Bongser will now dismount his hobby horse in the manner of Dettori. He hopes somebody will catch him. icon_thumb.gif
