Quote DParky="DParky"Can't believe TonyGee is claiming the moral victory. Leigh were vastly superior in defence and that is what is winning us games plus our halfbacks played in dinner jackets throughout that game while Webster and Thackeray by comparison rarely cracked our line. I thought Leigh were very unlucky not to have another three tries on the board. 46-16 would have been a fairer reflection of the game.
Lets face it, that Leigh pack steam-rollered right over the top of Widnes highly rated front row which included two "SL" forwards who were made to look very ordinary. The sheer pressure we were able to build on that Vikings defence saw them collapse like a deck of cards as they did against Wigan, as they did against Toulouse.
Our first half meant there was a bit of latitude and whilst Widnes can and do put points on teams quickly when Leigh re-established themselves, the Vikings again didn't look like getting through.
Roll on Tuesday night.
We can still play better but that first half was a complete half from Leigh - very impressive.'"
Nothing highly rated about the widnes pack at the minute. Gannon is very much a trier (or is that tryer) and is good as part of a decent pack, but with Grady in the 2nd row, Jordan James who is completely off the pace propping and also Chris Gerrard at 13 - its an awful pack, truely awful. With the players we have we'd probably want to play Gannon, Smith, Pickersgill, Kavanagh, Allen and Doran. Insead we had Gannon, Netheton, James, Grady, Doran and Gerrard.
This dicussion about the Leigh performance is quite interesting. I mean Leigh looked great at times and we were awful. Apalling defending and littered with individual errors. But if we were that bad and Leigh that good, why wasn't the score a wider margin? I was absolutely gutted by the Widnes performance, but with 18 minutes left we were only 8 points down.
I liked Leigh's attacking style and I'm sure they put some decent scores on the board this season. I think the only worry for Leigh might be defence. I can remember breaks or half breaks by Ainscough, Webster, Thackeray, but don't think we actually finished any of those breaks off. I also remember Ford having a 2 man overlap about 10 yards out in the 1st half and yet he didn't pass it until he was on the deck and ref then ruled a forward pass. From the teams I've seen so far, Leigh are deservedly top but with a lot of improvement left in Widnes and obviuously the threat of Featherstone, Halifax and Barrow, I don't think anything has been decided as yet. Having said that, Widnes do have to find some form and fast if we are to not fall too far behind.
