Love him or hate him, 163 consecutive appearances should make Stuart Littler a Salford legend in anyone's book :Others/NA.JPG
Franchising IMO will only have a limited shelf life before it becomes totally negative to the games expansion.
If Wakefield hadn't hit financial difficulties would people be saying they should go down (indeed they could finish 6th this year and be booted out to be replaced by a team finishing 8th in the Championship - nothing wrong in the rules of the current game in that but considering we are supposed to be a sport totally farcical).
The RFL have already said Halifax are ready for SL, Widnes are ready , if we win something I'd imagine we won't be far away and Fev are now showing intent with the improvements to the ground it wants, Barrow are going in the right direction and with Toulouse and Sheffield ticking expansion boxes (and I'd suspect also not too far away in other areas ) and its evident we will soon have too many clubs 'ticking boxes' for SL than places available (and that's not mentioning the fantastic work that true RL clubs such as Batley do year in year out).
In SL only Crusaders and Wakefield are real contenders for the drop based on the financial difficulties they have had but both offer something to the game so do they deserve to be thrown out ?
Throw into the pot some clubs in SL who are just not quite strong enough when playing the top 4 or 5 teams and its does suggest we need a two tier fully professional league with a one up one down progression based on the on field factors (as all clubs should meet the off field factors).
I think a 2nd tier of SL is essential if we are going to progress properly as a sport, We can't keep extending SL and watering the intensity down (and please lets not water the Championship down by extending it - yet again its proving to be a league where scores are unpredictable - it MUSTN'T be touched IMO).
The hard part for the RFL is ensuring the clubs go for this, many must be voting out of self interest and short term gains rather than looking at the bigger picture.
IMO though the RFL have to force this issue through if our game is ever to realise its potential in the UK and move from a minority sport to a mainstream one.
