My first Wire hero

I’m sure I’m not the only one but I wanted to BE John Bevan!

Same loved watching him play. So was massive when I was presented my Duke of Edinburgh award by him way back in the day

Bought my first season ticket and Junior membership from John Bevan.

Superb article. And a huge relief, as when I saw the thread title, I was filled with dread that he must have died!

Wonderful special player. I remember him moving to stand-off at Hilton Park at the last minute after Ken Kelly pulled out and he ran a more than decent Leigh side ragged. He made several breaks and either finished them himself or put someone else in for a walk in.
As a supporter for 50 years plus, he was one of the finest to wear the P&B.

Bongser accidentally found himself brought to this thread (hate tracker pads - give me the mouse, Lennie) and assumed the same as you, Speculator. Even as a 'rival' fan, felt the same relief too.

I remember as a kid watching Wire v Saints at Knowsley Road. We had somehow ended up with tickets for the old wooden main stand and ended up among the locals - John Bevan singlehandedly won us the game, scoring 4 tries and just generally being John Bevan ... even the locals applauded him at the end.

Put simply, John Bevan was box office, one of those small number of players who, even as an opposition fan, you were excited to see.

He was also one of the few players from that era who I can confidently say would have been just as successful in today's game.

An absolute legend.

As a Welsh RU fan born in the late 60s, I can just about remember him, so it's good to read articles like this.
