I've just been told this sad news.

A week before my 40th birthday (too many years ago) Mrs G asked me who were my fave Wire players, so I reeled off the usual suspects. Mike Gregory, Davies, Roberts, Boyd and Drummond. I thought nothing more of it.

Surprise party, and superb birthday cake organised by Mrs G, with Dessie style figure on top, in the act of scoring. Made up.

Des was a legend to ANY RL fan, a top player. There'll be plenty gutted in Leigh, too.

Words can't describe how devastated I was when I just heard this news. My absolute idol growing up watching the wire.

Absolutely gutted to hear this news. He was a Legend and superstar at Leigh. I actually spoke to him last season in the Legends bar at the LSV, an absolute gentleman. I enjoyed many a game watching him home and away. You will be sadly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. RIP Des.

Oh my just thought I’d take a trip on RL only to see this thread.Without question my fav all time player who when a child I couldn’t sleep Sat night at the thought of seeing my hero.Such a young age to be taken.Gutted an understatement.

I didn't see that coming. You think your heroes will live forever and in my mind this fella will.
He was my RL hero before he even signed for warrington due to his exploits on superstars.
Whilst he was still at Leigh my dad knew a couple of dessies mates and he came home from work one day with a giant signed poster of Des playing for GB and a signed testimonial brochure from his Leigh testimonial.
Can't remember the number of times I read that testimonial brochure from front to back.
When we signed him it was like all my birthdays and Christmases had come at once.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends..

Oh man couldn’t believe when I saw the title of this thread, one of my all time favourite players at Wire and had many a chat with him, absolutely blown away reading of his passing, watching him run at defenders was awesome and must have been terrifying for opponents.

S*** news. One of the select few appreciated by fans of all clubs. A true great.

Really sad news.
Loved watching Des play at Leigh and he put in a good shift when he went to Wire with Woody too. They don’t make them like that anymore. Gutted.

Time steals everything and too few of my heroes remain.

Charismatic, exciting and a genuine star, I consider myself very fortunate to have seen him play. Gòodnight Dessie.

Been to the game today and was shocked and saddened to hear there would be a minutes silence for Des, incredible player.
