| as pretend Tory Boy, Tony Blair once said....
Fast forward a quarter of a Century, and STILL, Warrington's downfall is RECRUITMENT, RECRUITMENT, RECRUITMENT.
We have two ageing props.... a fact that cannot be ignored..... but it has
Daryl Clark is quality
As is Currie, but he depends on being surrounded by quality.
Which brings me to the rest of our forwards.
Akuoaala (sp I can't be bothered spelling it right) is a JOKE
Jason Clark....pathetic. But he's Inglis' mate
Our "captain" pinching a living.
Philbin. For the last 18 months, it might as well be Maggie Philbin.
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GROW SOME TESTICLES, AND GET RID OF 5HITE, I STEAD OF EXTENDING CONTRACTS?
Never mind. We'll probably be flat track bullies again in a few weeks, and put 50 points against someone, and the same players will have contracts extended.

| I think if we did this, some players would wake up and realise they can’t cruise here anymore and we might see some better performances. We’d get a better class of player coming in rather than dross that signs for a quiet paycheck.

They slowed the rook down enough to nullify clark.
In my eyes its yet another big game that weve come up short in. We have a bunch if players who are good enough to make up the numbers in a g winning side but were missing the few players who are the ones that are the g winning players to lead us and not accept these type of performances from their team mates.
Powell will have a big player change over in his first two signing windows I would have thought that's what's going to be needed to get us to consistent title contenders again.

You're right Jason Clark has been worth 16 points a game for us ever since he joined!
They played well, they nullified our main threats and nobody else stood up to offer anything.

Where did I say J Clark was worth 16 points? I said we missed him. I'm not his biggest fan but todays game is where you need a steady-eddy like him. Cas were good value for the win, but a 60% performance would've got us over the line, but we put in a 20% show....all down to the coach.

| Was it me but did we look slow and unfit compared to Cas quick play the ball and enthusiasm? Was it a bit of arrogance with Cas on a poor run coming into the game and if it’s the former what the hell is our conditioning coach doing as they all looked as though they’d just got out of bed and agree with some posters that the club seems to be going back to its old ways regarding he’s my mate can we sign him just based on that and regarding J Clark he certainly won’t go down in the clubs history as a great signing as I for one hardly notice him even when he’s playing but that can be said for quite a few and def agree with Lefty about ageing props.Let’s hope that’s Powell’s first priority.

We needed fast play the balls, that's not what Jason Clark offers. This team lacks belief when we go down a couple of scores. The players we had on the pitch can perform much better than they did yesterday.
What we really miss is a good coach, I'm well in agreement with you there.

| Every year we go through this silly game of pretending our squad is "man for man, better than Saints/Wigan", with the number of "England internationals" brought up (how many of them have actually been successful at international level? that's a more telling measure). We extend various players' contracts to baying applause from the sheep on here about how we're set up for success in the future, and talk like we're within touching distance of being a Grand Final team and only need the right coach.
Also every year, we have a few moments of clarity, usually when we lose a big game, where someone brings a reality check to the forum (usually lefty) and in the aftermath of the defeat, people will read it and think "he's not wrong you know".
We have a squad full of senior players who are not leaders, they play well when things are going well but when things go against us, a lot of them go anonymous together. Too many of our players are bigger "names" than they are performers, which brings me back to the whole "England internationals" argument. It's not a squad set up to win the Grand Final. I'm not saying you'd need to do a total overhaul, we could win a Grand Final with some of these guys in the team, but we need to get much better at recruitment - find the diamonds in the rough, players who are going to play better with us than they have done with their former clubs, rather than "England internationals" whose careers have plateaued or are in slow decline.
The one cause for hope I have is Powell, if we let him have significant influence over recruitment. I posted once before about the Leeds side he took over from Dean Lance and the moves he made to reshape that squad between 2001 and 2003. It is really instructive if you look at the guys who he moved on and the guys he brought in. Leeds under Lance had a lot of the same type of players that current Wire do. Also his first four years at Cas between 2013 and 2017...when you look at that squad that dominated the league season and reached the GF in 2017 (playing outstanding rugby), it featured players who weren't really seen as big names a few years before, he improved players that were already there and he brought in the right type of players who fit the type of rugby he wanted to play.
Powell will come in as an outsider without history and loyalty to these players and he doesn't seem like the type to be impressed by bullpoopers or go doing false hype fluff pieces for the Warrington Guardian about how fantastic our squad is to sell season tickets, he will see the players for what they are, as he did when he coached against them.

| The thing is, we haven't got ageing props. We've got 2 older props and then Akoala, Philbin, Mulhern and Butler. We just chose or feel we have to play the two aged props for 60 mins which may come back to Lefties point of recruitment or may point at Price's tactics. He's not started with a front row of either combination of the younger 4 this season from what I can remember. We've also sent Doro and Kibula out on loan.
If i were a winger i wouldn't come to us and if i were a young prop I'd give us a wide berth too, hopefully Powell changes that

| The problem is there's a significant drop off in quality when the older props come off. Its not like the early TS era when we had ageing props but the younger guys to rotate in were Cooper or Hill.

| We had 4 workhorses of props in the days of Smith, & Cooper was still a promising youngster ,& still we didn't win the big one.

| But taking Cooper and Hill out of the pool, of the rest only Mulhearn is currently offering any go-forward.
Philbin has flatlined a little, Butler is a work in progress and Akuola is well, lacking in stamina to be polite.
However, I do think Powell will already be looking at the squad with objective, dispassionate eyes and seeing where the gaps and weaknesses are, and has probably identified far more than us.

Don't forget Powell won nothing at Leeds, and he's still won nothing significant at Cas (this may change soon if the 'S' choke). It was only really in 2003 under Powell that Leeds looked like they could be contenders, but even then we were way off, and lost 5 times in a season to the Bulls. Powell was okay for us but I don't buy into the conspiracy theory that he built Tony Smith's team. Smith added Bai, Lauitiiti and gave the team the x-factor that had been missing for 32 years.
Don't get me wrong, I think Powell has worked wonders at Cas, and I'd rather he came back to Leeds instead of who we have now. But he wasn't the super coach at Leeds that some make him out to be. If anything he repaired the damage of the Lance years, but as a recruiter the real stand out was Graham Murray (RIP), who preceded Lance.

Fair points, I do think that Powell is a better coach now than he was at Leeds though. Got to respect him for stepping down to fev after that dissapontment and continuing his coaching development. FWIW Tony Smith finished the job and others are involved behind the scenes but Powell was definitely a part of that journey.
I think it's a great fit for us really, his attitude towards entertaining rugby is right and his reputation as a coach that hasn't won anything should make his as hungry for success as we are.
