| You like Sam Beckett can quantum leap back within your own lifetime. You have landed in the shoes of the match day commissioner but you have power to over turn one referee decision good or bad on any Wire game to change the outcome of history....
What will you change?

Yes I read that thought. And it was great. But '#1' is about a play or score and #2 is about a feild decision.

| Billy Thompson when he was in the area used to call at a pub in Earlestown called Charlie Owens when Ernie Ashcroft was landlord. I had the dubious pleasure of talking to him many a time. After a couple of scoops he could be very revealing with his conversation. My favourite tale of his was the occasion he refereed the Challenge Cup Final involving Leeds and Leigh in the days of AJ Murphy...He visited both dressing rooms pre-match and said *Now then lads, nobody has ever been sent off in a Challenge Cup Final but Billy Thompson's never refereed here before so behave yourselves* He very often talked about himself in the third person...Obviously he was determined to send somebody off and Syd Hynes was the fall guy. Billy was a narcissist of the first order but you couldn't help liking him

Sorry, BBHO, but anybody who was there, THAT fateful Sunday afternoon in March 83, would beg to differ.
The most ridiculous referring performance I've EVER seen, and that includes Olympic boxing bouts.

| I was there. The CC 1/4 final.
The day the Brian Bevan stand opened....(incidentally it was a whopping £5 with a free 1/2 pint of beer included to sit in that stand.)
Too dear for me, plus I wasn't 18 then!

It was against Hull, but the Bevan Stand had opened a few weeks earlier (against Hull).
Despicable refereeing.
Not long after this, Thompson retired (thank ****) and was co-opted onto the Hull board. Rats smelled.
