Similar topic to the Allan Bateman thread but I thought I’d start a new one.
Last night I watched this: The Rugby Codebreakers: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09w01q4 via @bbciplayer
Brilliant programme on the importance of Welshmen in rugby league and how they are revered up in the North but ignored in Wales.
Who have been our best Welsh players down the years? Jiffy, Bateman, John Bevan?
Maybe this is what we’re missing in SL now, some of that Welsh quality and flair to compliment Northern players and add to the numbers.

| The clip of the 1972 Sports Personality of the Year show was quite interesting. It was put down to a racial issue but here we are today and the attitudes to League have not changed one bit. Not race or class, just an easy way to channel that repressed bigotry for some.

| Welsh lads certainly turned out to be some of the best players in League & probably the most famous i can remember is Billy Boston at Wigan. Most teams had Welshmen in their ranks but Union turning professional soon put paid to that. That day was probably the worst day so far in the history of Rugby League.

| Quite a moving story, if being Welsh and switching codes was bad enough, to be Welsh and black you were nothing more than a slave.

A bad day indeed. If only Wales hadn’t decided to stick with Union back in the 1890s. Imagine what could have been if they’d decided to become professional with the North...

Indeed.
“...didn’t even get a mention...”
What a joke.

Another one of the worst days was England winning the RU World Cup in 2003, which led to a massive surge in popularity for their game.
The Welsh Union was bad, but remember that quote attributed to George Orwell, "A bomb placed under the West Stand at Twickenham would set back the cause of British fascism by 50 years".

| Thought provoking programme, even my wife who has no interest in the sport was moved by it.

If the rugby apartheid was going on right now, in the modern world we would win the hearts of the neutrals.

| I finally got round to watching it.
I did enjoy that, I must admit.
Who's this Prof Tony Collins then? What's his normal output like?
