im learning the history of the game as it unfolds in front of me, by the time im 50 i should know a few things

Once there were the dark ages where it was always winter and the game was ruled by savages eating pies.

The dawn of civilisation came in 2009 when Tony Smith arrived at Warrington so most serious history lessons will begin in this time.

I would say if you want to read up on history start at 2009 and work your way forwards.

When I started getting into League three years ago I read Tony Collins' book and found it fascinating. I knew some of it in broad terms already but I came away thinking some parts of it would actually be a cracking idea for a film or TV drama

In 1895 a bunch of Northern troublemakers tried to ruin the fine gentlemans game of rugger, being paid to drag themselves through the winter's mud, until the age of enlightenment in 1996 when Sky TV expunged all historic records and gave the game its global status.

"The Forbidden Game" should be a must read for all Rugby fans. It's available from Amazon or a Kindle edition.

The breakaway came as a result of *broken time* payments. The northern clubs wanted to make up wages of men who had to work on Saturdays as part of their working week.....Players up here lost their Saturday wages...The toffs could afford to play for nowt but the miners and factory workers couldn't.
