46584_1279360105.jpg Warrington RLFC: The Wire, NOT Warrington Wolves

| Have they had some financial injection recently?
I'm just curious because I was in Golden Square before the match yesterday and saw a massive board advertising their "push for the Football League" or words to that effect, which surprised me, then when I got into the ground I saw someone wearing a Warrington Town shirt for the first time in my life.
They never had any advertising, support, or presence anywhere in Warrington when I lived there, aside from being reported on in the Guardian, so I wondered if things were changing.
I have no reason to wish ill of them, so good luck to them if they do go up the pyramid a bit, but their use and branding of the nickname "The Wire" does irritate me a bit. Fans determine nicknames, not marketing men, and "The Wire" in Warrington were, are, and always will be the rugby team.

That board has been up for about a year now if memory serves, it annoys me too that they have recently adopted 'the wire', I suppose their argument would be that it is a taboo in our marketing department and the term refers to the town itself rather than RL specifically, however I think it does them no favours and they would be better off trying to give themselves a unique identity rather than taking the easy option of using the wire which ultimately restricts them to being seen as the town's second football club.

They certainly won't be getting anywhere near the Football League if they stay at Cantilever Park.

Just on the wire comment, have you seen the new caps they've got on sale in the shop?

The club are slowly but surely accepting it back though, with things like "News Wire", and I bought my girlfriend's 12 year old son a cap in the club shop yesterday which has barbed wire on it.
The Wire is probably the second strongest traditional nickname in rugby league after Saints, as even fans of other clubs routinely use it to refer to us, and in terms of regular use by it's own club's fans Wolves is probably the weakest Super League era moniker still in existence. It's not even as popular as Giants and Warriors, nevermind Bulls and Rhinos.
I don't think the club would actually be allowed to produce merchandise with "The Wire" written on though, because WTFC have bought the copyright, and that's extremely cheeky in my opinion. I suppose "Wires" would be the easy way round it if the club so desires, but there shouldn't need to be a way round it.

| He'll want to be careful with that barbed wire hat Dropkick.
Am I the only one who just twigged 'News Wire' was a play on words?

I don't know for certain, but I remember someone posting on here once that they were connected with the club in some way and saying they had.

TBH all the names you've quoted are all my jacksy really & identify with the perception of Rugby League by Sky & the way they wanted to Americanise it with a franchise system. The sooner all those ridiculous nicknames disappear the better.

As a supporter of both the Wire and the Yellows (the name the supporters give town) im not sure if we have bought the rights,
Gary Skents is the Chairman of the club so might be the best person to ask.
As for this season the club have hopes for promotion this season following the appointment of Shaun Reid (brother of Peter) as manager.
However the football league dream has been around for the last 5 years and we have not moved in the league pyramid and could do with a few more people from warrington to come and watch .

Would you believe that a few minutes after posting that I had a flashback to seeing them when I got my saints ticket yesterday, haha!
I quite like 'wire' and 'wolves' being kept seperately, the former has a feeling of tradition and belonging to the fans on the terraces, whilst the latter represents the club's corporate image which is invaluable today, not only does it give us an identity which can be used for merchandise, mascots etc it's a name which is becoming recognised nationwide from my experience of speaking to people at uni etc.
I also think it's a good touch that 'Wolves' is relevant to the club and town's heritage. The golden gates, crest and Wilderspool. I can't say I would have the same enthusiasm for Wildcats.
Just a quick addendum, whilst I have no interest in soccer I would always wish Town every success, I went to their 2010 end of season dinner which was a great night and there seems to be a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes lately which should be commended.

I agree completely. I was simply pointing out that they have caught on in some places - most notably Bradford and Leeds - more than they have in Warrington where the "old" nickname is still going strong.

If you read the Peel Holdings Ocean development proposals (along with some of the other "aims" on their website) they won't be getting anywhere near a footbal field if they stay at Cantilever Park
