32137_1302980312.jpg Fat blokes in the mud, flat caps, bogs that drain pi55 directly onto your boots - Now it's all 'Big Ask', 'Arm Wrestle', 'Collision' 'Contact' 'Facials' 'Upper Body Strength' 'Big Units' 'Scooting from Dummy Half' 'Energy Levels' 'Laying the Platform' ‘Middles’ and 'T-R-Y'. | At the birth of Superleague where did the name Wolves come from, and were there any other alternative contenders at the time?

| I am happy to be stood corrected, but the wolf is part of the towns crest and was the reason for Warrington to become Warrington Wolves.
Of course, traditionalists will always refer to then as 'The Wires'
I have no idea if any other names were considered though...

| A wolf was also on the club badge at the time (the one used between the town coat of arms and the current logo).
I can't recall if any other options were publicly mentioned.

| Prior to us becoming the wolves, hadn't we started to use a new 'badge' on some of the leiusre range that was the wolf's head profile from the centre of the town crest, in a barbed wire diamond.
I suppose it was a fairly simple move to become the Wolves from that. However, I wish we'd retained that original wolf head badge, as the new one is blooming awful - just too much complexity of detail in it to be striking

| Heaven knows why we couldn't be The Warrington Wire/s.
Instead of wolfie we could have had some baffoon running round in a suit that resembled a piece of barbed wire.
Also all those tattoo enthusiasts would not have had to fork out for a new tattoo as the barbed wire tatts around their upper arms would suffice.
We have a sort of mixed identity as the old guard continue to use The Wire whilst the younger generation probably only know The Wolves. Its a shame because in time The Wire tag will die away and will be lost forever.
For me Warrington RLFC will always be The Wire and the 'Wolves' will just be a cheap gimmick brought about by Sky TV.

| You very rarely here fans refer to us as Wolves. I personally hate it and seeing a lot more flags at Wembley with Wires rather than wolves gave my heart a nostalgic glow.
It could have been worse though, we could have been the Cheshire Wolves.

| Reffy wrote "Warrington were 'The Wire' not 'The Wires'"
In fact, originally they were "The Wire-pullers" referring to the worker that did the wire-pulling in the wire industry.
Wire is drawn into longer and longer lengths and consequently smaller and smaller diameter by being pulled (either by hand or machine) through diamond or tugsten carbide dies with a hole in.

| Helps the clubs with merchandise sales, especially with younger supporters.
The wolf was a combination of the town crest, and the The Wolf Pack season ticket scheme (already in existance at the time), plus I think Paul Cullen's role was in marketing at the time.

Correct it was he that came up with the name. It was coincidence that a wolf head is in the Warrington crest

Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but even without speaking to Mr Cullen himself, I would strongly think he would have drawn inspiration from the fact a wolf appeared on your logo already.

| I guess Im a relative newbie (ten years) so may have a different view to others. I like the current badge and the wolves brand. Its relevant to the club given the wolf on the previous badge and the town crest. Its good from a marketing point of view as it raises the profile of the club and gives us a bit of a unique identity. Its a good way of selling the club to the kids.
I ilke the fact that the "wire" element is being kept alive by the fans and hasnt been hijacked by the any marketing men. Its a big piece of our history and I feel that we the fans "own it" so to speak.
I think we've got the balance spot on to be honest..
