| My emailDear Sirs,
Once again I think a mockery has been made of the disciplinary in Superleague. How does Keith Senior (incident ON/704/09) get away with a 1 match ban for striking an opponent (twice) with enough force to put him to the ground!? (The RFL is based in Leeds is a possible theory?)
But I can point you back to a complete over reaction by the RFL with a decision regarding Ben Westwood against Catalan Dragons 21.02.2009 ON/38/09 A high tackle that is witnessed week in week out in Superleague, that supposedly warrants a 5 match ban. In my opinion and many others you have the disciplinary guidelines upside down here. Punching is completely unacceptable. Senior has got away without punishment. 1 match on a nothing game against Salford where he would probably be rested anyway is no punishment to anyone! It should have been 4 games.
Kind Regards,
RFL's response
Dear ***
The Tribunal considered Senior’s punch ugly and unacceptable. Particularly as Senior is a high profile player in a high profile match and a role model to hundreds of youngsters in the game. However Senior has an excellent record, having only 2 appearances before the Tribunal in 16 years as a professional, and none since 2000. The Tribunal gave Senior significant credit for this record. In Westwood’s case the Tribunal believed that the tackle was particularly bad as his opponent was knocked out cold and sustained an injury in the tackle that caused a 6 match absence from the game. Westwood had previously been found guilty of high tackles by the Tribunal on a number of occasions. On that basis the Tribunal considered a 5 match ban appropriate.
Thank you for contacting the RFL.
Kind Regards

| fair point i think.
aswell as Seniors excellent disciplinary record, there may have been some provocation from Wilkin that we weren't aware of. Senior did seem to take exception to something Wilkin had done or said - he was livid wasn't he.
and to be fair it was more of a slap than a punch, Wilkin went down like he had been shot by a sniper

| I actually thought that was a very good response from the RFL, explained the situation very well.
For Senior to have a disciplinery record like that after being in the game for so long is exemplary.

| I agree it was a very good response, I just wanted to see what their motives are behind decisions!
I questioned them a few weeks ago with reference to the Kieron Cunningham punching Stosic with the ball carrying arm. (Which fractured his eye socket!) I have their resposne to that one if anyone is interested lol

| I'm impressed with the RFL for getting back to you.
Also can't argue with their reply. Fair play to them.

| My 1st email
Dear Sirs,
I cannot understand the RFL disciplinary committee’ recent decision to give Keiron Cunningham just a caution for striking an opponent and breaking his eye socket. Surely under the RFL rules this player should have been given the appropriate sentence as set out below. In my view he should have been sentenced between grade A and C. Firstly at the least he lashed out at an opponent (A-B) Failing that your decision is based on the fact that the player accidentally made contact with the players eye socket. Surely this comes into the category of being ‘Reckless’ a reasonable person would be able to consciously recognise that aiming a strike to the head of an opponent runs the risk of making contact with the eyes, nose, cheekbone, jaw or mouth. However I think the strike was intentional.
Looking at the guidelines and evidence in my view the player should have been charged with a category C offence.
Details of Charge / Reason for NF Player intentionally has a jab at the Wakefield player and as such is guilty of misconduct; however the Panel are giving him the benefit of the doubt that contact with the eye is accidental and as such consider that it is appropriate to deal with this matter by way of a caution
So Mr Cunningham didn’t know that Stosic had eye sockets on his face????
2.5 LAWS OF THE GAME
The Laws of the Game On Field Misconduct offences are15.1(a) Trips, kicks or strikes another player
Strikes – punching
A-B
Reaction to opponent – lashing out
Strikes
B-C
Strikes with hand, arm or shoulder – reckless
Sorry for the rant but I just felt the decision to just issue a formal caution is unjustified and will certainly pave the way for more players to strike with the ball carrying arm.
RFL's response
Thank you for your recent email,
Keiron Cunningham was issued with a formal caution: he was not found 'not guilty'. A formal caution means that the match review panel considered that he was guilty of misconduct and this will now appear on his disciplinary record (and will therefore be taken into account by the Operational Rules Tribunal in deciding sanction if he is found guilty of any offence in the future). The reason the MRP decided to issue a formal caution rather than refer the matter to the Operational Rules Tribunal can be found on the disciplinary section of our website. In summary the Panel did not consider the strike to be particularly violent or aggressive and the Panel felt that he should be given the benefit of the doubt that any contact with Stosic's eye was accidental.
I hope this helps and again thank you for taking the time to contact the RFL
