| This might be a very good appointment, but yes it's certainly a gamble. One point I think we need to remember is that we have not had a real leader and captain for a long time and it must surely have been a significant contributor to our poor attitude and performances. No one is going to argue with Burgess, his track record puts him firmly in the Morley bracket. As a player he is head shoulders and probably ankles above any of our current players so will get the respect needed to implement his coaching and playing standards. He will undoubtedly import all the current Aussie training/ coaching regimes ( Tick ), but what we don't know is how good his tactics, people and development skills are going to stand up. Still, he has a couple of very well respected people working in the background to help him out.
I am pleased the Board has had the balls to appoint him.

What is the rush? Burgess isnt taking over this season anyway, so no need to appoint anyone atm. Take your time, sound out people see who is intetested. Top job at warrington is a decent gig, good wages and resources. Im sure there would be plenty of quality coaches that would be interested.

| I do find it strange that anyone would be having a real go and being down about this appointment.
Why would a fan be wanting a coach to fail from that start? Other than so they can point back and say ‘I told you so’ on an internet message board.
I’m actually quite excited for this.
I also think it’s being done in the right way. Give the new coach and his staff a bit of time to asses things, get some players lined up… then give him a clean slate from the start of a new season. No coach deserves to have to come in now and be judged on the back of this team currently.

| After Holbrook I don’t think there was anyone with proven track record we could of gotten even if we took time.

| There must also be a plus side of players wanting to come and play for Burgess and also us linking in more with Souths. Any young up and coming Aussie on Souths' books who is a year or two away from the NRL and fancies cutting his teeth over here.....we'd be first choice surely.

| Just watched this mornings nrl 360 and there was a little piece on burgess. All the journalists talked about him as a coach in glowing terns and called him a certain future nrl head coach. Well that won't happen if he flops with us. This is going to work out very well for us and the opposition fans(as well as some of our own!) who are mocking us over this move are going to have a nice big slice of humble pie.

Do we want to use overseas quota spots on young Aussie players who are a year or two away from first team standard? What signal would that send to any young player in the Wire Academy?

| I really like the positive way that so many are taking this decision. Sure it's a bit of a risk but nearly all appointments are.
It is definitely more exciting than our last two Head Coach appointments. Creating a new position for Chambers reduces the risk & gives support to our new Head Coach. As for other team's "fans" ... I don't really give a toss as they were going to criticise whatever we did.
Bring it on.

I am underwhelmed by burgess been given the job as i think its too big a gamble. In no way do i want him to fail. I want the complete opposite. I wish him well and hope the gamble pays off.

| Yes its a big risk... FOR BOTH PARTIES. We (Wire) are taking a big risk on an inexperienced, very young coach taking his first steps towards a top level coaching career. ALSO, Sam is taking a risk on us..big time. We have all the potential in the world...but equally we are a basket case on the pitch. Its a big risk for him to come here...it could ruin him.
I'll back him, wish him all the best and good luck...I really hope it works out.... (I remember saying exactly the same about Powell). Its never dull is it!

That's pretty much how I feel.
After Holbrook turned us down, I'd rather us just "chill out", and get the right man for the job. Getting a coach 4 days after a rejection, feels a little knee jerk. This season is as good as finished, so let Chambers and Marshall see it through, THEN get the coach. We might have got an NRL man nearing the end of his contract, or a chairman who wanted rid of his coach.
However, we've not. We've done what we've always done (bar Smith) and took a gamble.
I hope (and badly want it) to pay off.

That's the Warrington way, I'm afraid.
Invest in youngsters, then get someone else in

| Having a cracking young Aussie prospect does not mean you can't play any Academy kids who are good enough to make the first team. The young Aussie protege would be blocking the way of an over-the-hill antipodean having a quota spot.
Also the Burgess thing may not have been knee-jerk but a well-thought out plan B which the board could be praised for,
