| You can't argue with any awards.
You can't argue with winning cups and I know what I prefer for my team to do.

| Well done to Sam. It's true, wigan is less than half the team without him. His game has MANY deficiencies but he has scored a lot of tries this season and has carried wigan to the top of the table.
Benny will have a ring and wire will have a big trophy if everything goes well. I think that's preferable to 'club of the year' and 'man of steel'. No used getting worked up.

| Well deserved for Tomkins. As has been noted, he's more important to Wigan than probably any other player is to their respective teams. Plus, it's only going to get more so next year when he goes from a supporting cast of Finch and Leulai to Laughable Matty Smith and Blake Green.
Aside from Tomkins' obvious personality defects, he's a class player, even the most one eyed supporter of another team would admit that. When he goes to Union (might go to NRL I suppose but suspect he'll fancy joining his brother) they'll be much gnashing of teeth and talk of creating ill thought out ways to give him loads of money to stay (see Cunningham, Keiron) - probably by Martyn Sadler.

The awards are given on SuperLeague performances between rounds 1-27 no cup performances are meant to be included and voting takes place before play offs so getting to tbe grand final means nothing towards the awards.

| Well deserved award for Sam. I thought he would get it. Did the Catalans get club of the year in 2011?

| If team, or club, of the year is simply going to go to the team that won the league, especially if they started the season as one of the favourites to do so, then what's the point. IMO far more deserving would have been Bradford for the way they coped with all the off field problems, and almost got into the playoffs, or Wakefield who managed to sneak into the playoffs despite being one of the pre season favourites to finish bottom.

| From the nominees Westwood is clearly The Man of Steel
IIRC the original intention of the award was to reward those who do the oft unseen work and graft that their contemporaries vote for.
If it is now for the "best player" of the year then say so and change the name of the award.

Giving an award to Bradford or Wakefield would have been ridiculous. You cannot award a club who went into administration. Part of the award concerns the viability of the club. In a similar way you cannot award mediocrity.

You're right about Bradford. I wasn't sure whether the award was for club or team (and was too lazy to be bothered checking) and as it is for the club, then Bradford couldn't really be considered.
I do however stand by my comments about Wakefield. From the position that they were in this time last year, to turn things around and finish as strongly as they did was a fantastic acheivement. It isn't about rewardng mediocrity, more acknowledging the efforts made on and off the pitch to turn things around.

| They give the awards to the small clubs as consolation because they don't get to the finals and challenge for the trophies.

| Any chance that Tomkins will be given an opportunity to show off his trophy before the start of the Grand Final on Saturday? I'm sure that he'd get a warm reception from both sets of fans!

It's not just to do with on field performance. It's also to do with marketing, community work etc. I think the Central Park initiative would have had a big influence.
Explained very well here.
Quote ="Wigg'n"Community work such as the launch of "Central Park" teaching and giving opportunities to youngsters (AND adults) in the area educating them not only about Sport but IT, Business, Health & Beauty, Construction, Motoring etc and giving 100s of young people a place to train and learn.
The fantastic effort raising £thousands for Joining Jack, Sport Relief and other charities.
The highest average attendance (I believe).
Large profits for FY11 which are being re-invested into aforementioned "Central Park".
These probably contributed heavily. It's not like the RFL of some desk-jockey muppets voted for us anyway, it's the other clubs that vote.'"

I agree on your second point, or like someone on the VT suggested; an award for Best Forward and Best Back.
On the first point, I wasn't around in 1977 but early winners included Doug Laughton, George Fairbairn and Joe Lydon so that doesn't really compound the theory that it should be awarded for "unseen work and graft" surely?

| Wigan's achievement of finishing top has to be put in context of their squad strength. On paper they do not have the strength of us, Saints or Leeds. They have one world class player in Tomkins, another real top player Finch who was great for the first half of the season but has tailed off recently, and the rest of their squad is good but not great. Good enough to be finishing 3rd to 5th but not to finish top.
Look at their pack compared to ours, they are not on the same page.
And yet despite losing home and away to us they have finished top which means they have been remarkably consistent through the season, thanks to
1) Sam Tomkins setting them apart from other sides - Wigan rarely drop points to smaller clubs, because they have a player that annihilates weakness. When Ronaldo was at United he had the same effect, United were relentless and smaller clubs struggled to get an upset against them. For all Warrington's strength we don't have a player like that.
2) Shaun Wane despite criticism, has done a superb job in his rookie season as coach, to get the team to overachieve without having the firepower (Tomkins apart) that his rivals do.
So the Man of Steel and Club of the Year awards are well deserved.

As has been said. Hock and Tommy are more than good and Charnley has been excellent this season too. Lima was arguably the form prop in the comp until he announced he was leaving. Apart from those, I'd pretty much agree. We've worked to our strengths and for the most part it's worked. I do think that if more emphasis was put on the LLS then Warrington or Leeds would have won it.
