Yes I read that thought. And it was great. But '#1' is about a play or score and #2 is about a feild decision.

| Mr &Mrs Thompson's decision to go to bed one night, and have [irumpy pumpy[/i which resulted in the birth of Billy......if indeed he knew who his father was.

| Billy Thompson when he was in the area used to call at a pub in Earlestown called Charlie Owens when Ernie Ashcroft was landlord. I had the dubious pleasure of talking to him many a time. After a couple of scoops he could be very revealing with his conversation. My favourite tale of his was the occasion he refereed the Challenge Cup Final involving Leeds and Leigh in the days of AJ Murphy...He visited both dressing rooms pre-match and said *Now then lads, nobody has ever been sent off in a Challenge Cup Final but Billy Thompson's never refereed here before so behave yourselves* He very often talked about himself in the third person...Obviously he was determined to send somebody off and Syd Hynes was the fall guy. Billy was a narcissist of the first order but you couldn't help liking him

Sorry, BBHO, but anybody who was there, THAT fateful Sunday afternoon in March 83, would beg to differ.
The most ridiculous referring performance I've EVER seen, and that includes Olympic boxing bouts.

| I was there. The CC 1/4 final.
The day the Brian Bevan stand opened....(incidentally it was a whopping £5 with a free 1/2 pint of beer included to sit in that stand.)
Too dear for me, plus I wasn't 18 then!

It was against Hull, but the Bevan Stand had opened a few weeks earlier (against Hull).
Despicable refereeing.
Not long after this, Thompson retired (thank ****) and was co-opted onto the Hull board. Rats smelled.

| Billy Thompson...
Yes he's a lifelong honoured member.
I've asked him live over Radio Manchester to explain his disallowing of 5 tries. He wouldn't answer only replying as to mock Warrington fans.

| He spoke at a dinner I was at and afterwards I asked him about it.
"Billy, that was pretty controversial that challenge cup QF wasn't it. How do you think it looked? A Hull guy making sure Hull FC won?"
He said "I've nothing to say to you lad, go away"
I said "Weren't you a Hull member or something?"
He stared straight ahead, waited a couple long seconds then turned the other way to speak to someone else

| I think it was the 1992, season challenge cup game at central park. We were understrength but really giving it to Wigan and due to this frustration. Andy Gregory jumps through the air and hits Allan Bateman straight across the face with a despicable high tackle and sends Bateman into a summersault !! Even the Wigan fans near me said " Christ he's defo off for that".. Bent ref Galtress only gave a penalty and actually had a laugh with the garden gnome instead of sending him off..!
I was only a nipper but I've never forgot it.
