Quote: the flying biscuit "Thing is seb I think listening to this Board and having the views on here taken as the views of the wider fan actually cost the club its atmosphere. how many people post on here fifty...one hundred....? listen to latchford bob and Dropkick they dont actually like or respect the game, they "suffer it" because they live in the town...we cant have them as the voice of 10,000 fans.

'"

I'd like to know what you base that on.

Someone mentioned snobbery on here earlier but I think there is a lot more Rugby League snobbery though. The debate isn't Football v Rugby and which is better. It's about atmosphere.

People can say they don't care about the atmosphere and only go to watch the game. That's fair enough, no one's asking you to join in and contribute. But don't tell me you've never said, when asked about the game, "It was a great atmosphere".

I've heard people of all ages and experience talk about how much they enjoyed the atmosphere. Not just Football and Rugby, but other sporting events, concerts or nights out. So atmosphere is clearly an important thing to the enjoyment of an event. Not just 2 out of 10,000.

ABW.:

Quote: Uncle Rico "Salford fans, who appear to be anti drum and jester hats, were singing because they were away from home and getting tonked, a kind of Dunkrk spirit if you like?

As has been said elsewhere, it's sometimes easier to galvanise support away from home, but, good luck to those that are at least having a go. The message seems to be join in if you want, or don't it's your choice, but, if your like minded, we (they) will be here in this particular corner having a go, that's their choice surely?

It's obviously a decent topic to 'debate', given the longevity of this thread and the number and variety of opinions expressed. However, for what its worth, the success or failure of this enterprise will not depend on what's posted on here. I don't think that the Fletcher, Salford's Shed, the Stretford End, Kop, Gwladys St or Kippax etc were/are democratic 'institutions', they just are what they are had a life of their own and you either want to be in it or not IMO.

May be thta's what all this is about finding a sense of place for those that want to be vocal? (i nearly said make some noise for your....nah)'"

Reading the Salford thread on the subject it would appear that most of their fans don't like crowds, they like being the select few, which should mean that they're very happy at the moment.
As regards this particular thread, I think it could be summed up be saying that it takes all sorts to make a rugby crowd. Personally I'm not keen on the drums and I don't really want to spend 80 minutes singing, but when I do come home to watch the wire I spend a full 80 minutes screaming and shouting support like I always have done. In fact I would imagine that i'm not always the best person to sit or stand next to because of the noise I make. You dopn't have to sing to make a real atmosphere.

i'd be happy to stand next to you, i'd rather have someone that is'involved' in the game than someone who's being quiet, that makes me feel awkward.

I agree with you and Teesside. Here's an idea, let's congregate in the South East now that the drums are going in the South West, so that we can start a 'we want to be 'involved' but not always singing' section?

Only messing, looking forward to being involved tonight "Now the Wire"

Correct and a very important point.

One of, if not the best atmosphere I've ever been in was United v Barcelona in '84 and it had nothing to do with any singing.

It's been fun.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_44480.jpg

I've been to games in which i've been so bored i couldn't be bothered singing, games that have been so tense i've kept quiet, games i've been so frustrated i've swore like a trooper, games so engaging i've sang my heart out for the extra encouragement.
I've been to games in which i've experienced a multitude of emotions. Some of those games have been derby matches some have been random teams you wouldn't expect much from.

You can't legislate for or even force 'an atmosphere', it's a completely organic occurrence.
Things in a game spark things off, fights, hard tackles, bad ref decisions. Look at the Catalan game this season, not the best but not the worst and considering they bring next to no one was an ok-ish atmosphere because of how the game panned out.

My favourite game for atmosphere was funny enough a Wigan game AT THE DW?? fka JJB, the one that TKL and Nikau were sent off, DVDV was in charge, that game was rocking and we were truly battered in that but the game had so much going on.

You have just reminded me of Australia v New Zealand at the HJ back in 2011. The game was a bit of a damp squib and there was no atmosphere, so as you do me and my mate stood talking about the game that was in front of us and the competition in general. Right at the end some gobby woman from Wigan turned round and said that by talking we had ruined it for her. Needless to say I told her it was a big stand and she could stand wherever she liked, I had travelled for three hours to watch the game and if I wanted to talk to a mate who I hadn't seen for a couple of months I would! Her husband/partner looked rather embarrassed. As someone else has said, it takes all sorts!

Awful tonight again. Seriously nobody cared. If all you want to do is chat to your mates over a pint go the pub - at least pretend you care. On the odd occasion the players stepped it up the crowd never responded.

Not a comparison. Just backing up someones opinion with something from my own experience.

Probably Widnes in the Lancashire cup semi in 89. The Australia game around the time was a bit special as well.

Those who follow the path of the righteous: shall have their reward.:

Playing exciting rugby, not the dour stuff the Wolves churn out should get a crowd going. As for drums you can place them somewhere they are appreciated ( about 100 miles from the stadium) and trumpets would alienate anyone standing within earshot, like the rubbish 7 notes they keep playing at England football games.
Singing and chanting great.

Lets face it most people on here dont speak for the majority they are one extreme end of the scale who would rather sit and watch a game in silence, knowone under 18 be aloud, and have the etiquette of a library, most fans want a half decent match day experience with a good atmosphere that can be enjoyed by people who also dont like a drum down there ear hole, surely they can be some sort of middle ground that would benefit everyone who bearing in mind follow the same team.
