| Bit off topic, to an extent, but meh.
With Warrington creeping back into the national media spotlight, with the John Terry look-a-like on the front page of a national tabloid, and the no kissing signs making the 10o'clock news t'other day, I thought I'd ask how people think we as a town, as people and as a club are percieved by a wider population?
I know that we have a few 'outsiders' on here, from chester or further beyond, how do people see the club you follow?
When you are on holiday, for example, and someone asks where you are from, do you quietly mutter 'Warrington' under your breath?
Or do you parade round in a shirt/shorts, etc and show pride for both your town and club?
Or somewhere in the middle?
What about those of us who have family elsewhere, or do a bit of travelling through work, or even those who studied higher education elsewhere? What do people seem to think of Warrington?

I went to university in the Midlands and to be honest I usually had to explain that Warrington was between Manchester and Liverpool as most people had never heard of it.

| A paradox wrapped in an enigma. Or is it the other way round?
A very parochial place, which at the same time seems to be screaming out to discover its own identity.
I think it comes from being located midway between Manchester and Liverpool.
Back in the day (1970's and 1980's) it was considered by others as a town full of brawlers!

I go to Uni in Ormskirk (Edge Hill) and i've had to explain to people where Warrington is.
As for a town identity, i don't think we really have one.

You'd be joking, right? They know where St Helens is at Edge Hill so I'm sure they do actually know where Warrington is, it's just that everone was drunk at the time or something.
As a St Helens person I've lately come to envy Warrington a bit in that it's a rich town. Well, when compared to St Helens it is anyway! If a shop is going to shut, they'll shut their branch in St Helens but always manage keep their Warrington branch open. If anything is going to happen which is not in Liverpool or Manchester, it's destined to be in Warrington. Meanwhile, I sit here in St Helens, watching shops close and all that stuff going to Warrington, wondering 'what about us?' (Well, I don't actually cry, but you get the idea maybe) Warrington used to be half the size of St Helens and pretty much a fleapit. But it just aint like that anymore. It has very successfully regenerated itself. Good on Warrington.
However, what is there to know about Warrington so far as the rest of the UK is concerned? When I've lived in other parts of the country and I've said I'm from St Helens they have known straight away where the town is and not because they think I'm a scouser! But because of the rugby. They haven't even been rugby fans themselves, but they've seen us in the Challenge Cup final and straight away I get 'oh they play rugby there, don't they?'. We've had Dr Beecham here and Sir whatsit Pilkington and a bit of the country's first canal and Johnny Vegas ( ) but all that is wasted on the rest of the world. It's the rugby what does it. So if all else fails to get Warrington national recognition, get yerselves to the Challenge Cup final!

| I'd love to see where Warrington would figure on a 'Family Fortunes' type survey - 'name a famous rugby league club'...
You said 'Warrington'.
Our survey said...

| One of my earliest experiences of 'Wire on tour' was in 2003 at Caracus Airport. I had that season's home jersey on (similar to this years away one, remember?) and heard a very unfamiliar, somewhat amusing, accent (that I could only place somewhere south of Kent and north of Brighton) say to me "excuse me, me and my mate were looking at your shirt and we wondered who it was". Before I had chance to answer, he stared intently at the badge and said "Warrington Wolves? Who are they, like a local team or something?"
I wasn't as quick witted back then as I am now, so just replied "No. Rugby League". He almost seemed disappointed to here my response and meekly said "Oh, Rugby [iLeague[/i" and walked off.

| I was talking to a builder from Wigan who always had the impression that Warrington was quite posh, until he got a job with the council and had to travel around some of the more earthy districts. That was an eye opener.
As someone who has lived here all my life, I don't see any difference from other towns. There are rough parts and very expensive parts. I do know that there are far better amenities in much smaller and poorer towns. That actually have a cinema in the town centre, a fun pool or a skating rink, somewhere for families to go after hours etc.

| When I was in Cyprus a couple of years ago, I went into a pub with my shirt on and it was instantly recognised by the Cypriot owner.
Apparently he was an ardent follower of the Super League and a big Warrington fan to boot.

A fella from Bury I was speaking to once had the impression that Warrington was posh. I literally laughed out loud at his exact words: "oooh Cheshire. [iVery[/i posh".

That was another point I was going to make. What seperates us as a township and its people from other flag waving, chest beating, good old fashioned towns up and down this country?
