I dont think Williams has ever given us value for money.
I'm not even slightly bothered by him leaving. He goes down as just another bad decision in the failed 'galactico' recruitment strategy of our club.
Hopefully we will start to move away from that desperate model now.
That's an interesting observation. Hopefully our galactico strategy is over now and we will stick with the model of signing hungry 'project' players who won't break the bank like Roderick Tai, Dan Russell and Oli Leyland. That's an approach that gets a far warmer reception among Wire fans. I guess the author was hoping for those players that fit between those polar opposites. But the level of debate on here means we have to have this facile "false dilemma" between galactico and basement, bargain bucket players like you have mentioned. Plenty of other clubs make sound signings without breaking the bank. One of them is currently top of the league. Hull KR spend the same money as we do (and have far fewer of their own youth products in the team). Do you think Waerea-Hargreaves is on £25k but came over for the East Hull air? I don't think we've had a 'galacticos' approach for years. If anything I think we went from a really successful era of recruitment where we picked up players like Ashton and Harrison to more of a bargain basement approach this year which has cost us dearly. We have 3 marquee players. I wonder how many other clubs have 3. We don't know how much Hull KR spend as the wage bill is different from the salary cap. Successful period of recruitment? Im not going to list the plethora of poor players we also signed around the time we signed Ashton and Harrison.

| Yes we currently have three Marquee. Players BUT one of them is Toby King which is a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if his new deal will still mean that he will Marquee Player for next season too?
Do any posters on here have any information about this?

I'll rescind the word 'era'; I should really have said 'model' as we did seem to be good at a time at getting early dibs on good Championship talent. You're right that we signed plenty of dross.

| The Ashton signing was right under Wigan's nose. Ashton was young championship player of the year at the time. I think Wigan were in for him but Karl tells a story of him pressuring the Swinton chairman for a decision at the same time Wigan were involved in a league game and, as such, were incommunicado.
Ashton could have multiple GF, a CC and WCC medals by now. I hope he doesn't regret joining us.

| King is only 50k on the cap so it makes sense to have him on it (marquee) while he is with us.

A counter point of view would debate why is King the highest paid player that Wire have produced currently? I've no Idea what his new contract is but he shouldn't be getting paid more than Currie and shouldn't be our 3rd Marquee player for 2026 season. He shouldn't have been rewarded with a new contract.

I’d agree Currie is a far better player, I’d argue that his performances dipped a little after his two ACL’s, which has affected his contract value going forward. For the past 18 months / 2 years he has been excellent. King fell lucky with his contract, he was at his peak performances and was in high demand. With hindsight it was the wrong decision to give him a contract of that size, but there would have been plenty of people frustrated at the time had we not retained him. I’d be surprised if he was our 3rd marquee for 2026.

| The King contract just shows how poor we have been in recruitment and retention. You wouldn't have seen Wigan signing him during the last 4 years.

He might not be a marquee player next year, we have no idea who will be. Currie should be our homegrown marquee as he's superb. He was easily man of the match yesterday for me, as said above, he's been brilliant for a few years now and well deserves it

| Just realised we should have Walker back in the next 2-4 weeks, ready for the playoffs push, once he's match fit it will add another dimension in attack for us. We still badly need a forward though, Our forwards did well yesterday but Hull were way off form. Next werk will be a big test for us, everyones been battering Salford, 58-0 today, i have one of those bad feelings we'll clock off and take it lightly. Hopefully we won't and can get some good points against them.
