Final solution was to park near Ashburys station. Near the traffic lights on West Gorton lane is a little side road/layby (similiar to the one near Borough Arms on corner of Mersey Street). No problem parking, FREE, and 15-20 minute stroll up to the stadium.

You could just park in official car park. We did last year 10quid and its behind fan zone area. No issues getting in or out. I really wouldn't be worrying about it there's 6 months to plan it. You can even do a few trial runs to see the parking areas described.

Train to Piccadilly station , then tram to ground. Should be up and running just after christmas.

As I said in the original post, this was about finding parking for the Wednesday night MCvRM champions league game so i didnt have 6 months to plan it. Was doing some casual work at the Etihad and didnt fancy losing over 1/4 of the wages in parking charges.
