As i've posted before, local amateur sides need all the help they can get and people going down to play/support will always be welcomed.
Things have been a little chaotic this year as some clubs make the decision to switch to being summer sides from March. In that case, they have the option of playing in a short "NW Interim Season" running from September to November. If staying winter, they stay in the North West Counties League as before. In the case of the National Conference League - they are switching on mass to summer so are also having an interim season with their 'A' sides playing in their own interim league, or playing in the "NW interim season" or even sticking in the NWC. Told you it was complicated!
the full listings of clubs (not including NCL) is available here: www.pitchero.com/clubs/burybronc ... _id=351348
For our local sides:
Eccles - switching to summer as part of the NCL and playing in Pool E (I think?). They have an 'A' side due to play in the NW Alliance League for NCL clubs.
Folly Lane - are switching to summer from March, have joined the NW Interim League and are in Division 1
Folly Lane A will play in the NW Interim League Division 2
Langworthy Reds - playing winter in the NWC Div 2
Irlam Hornets - playing winter in NWC Div 2
Cadishead Rhinos - played this summer and successfully reached the regional final. Are down to play in the Interim League Div 1 although it's been suggested they may have a break (confirm anyone?) ready for March as they are switching to summer.
Bury Broncos - played summer this year and made the early decision to be a summer club from now on. Are playing in Div 2 of the NW Interim League. Start the summer league in March. We are on the look out for new players etc. at Bury and more details can be found here: www.pitchero.com/clubs/burybronc ... _id=355281
Little Hulton Reds - played summer and are also playing in the NW Interim League Division 2 ready for March 2012 and a switch to summer.
Salford Central - new side that played this summer but folded.

the RFL have been supportive of clubs who want to switch but many at open age level have stayed winter. all the junior leagues in the NW are switching.
you can see why some want to stay in winter as in many cases it is because they have invested a lot in getting to the upper divisions and switching could be very disruptive to that. it's notable that many of the swithcing clubs are those from the bottom divisions and who are relatively new - they have less invested energy in the winter game and also, are probably still overcoming the barriers that the winter game presents (e.g. we at Bury struggle for winter training on grass).

Physically, I'd guess Hope Valley - a summer side who play in the middle of the Peak District! I do know of one person who said he was looking to run a side in Glossop/Stockport area from next March but not sure it has gone anywhere. Long drive, but more than welcome to navigate round the M60 to Whitefied.

folded i believe. they had a few lads from other clubs i believe but when we played them (think it was their last game in the end) they didnt have that depth presumably as lads had returned to their original club.
it's very hard to start a new side:
A) There aren't that many players around
B) There is no equivalent to having a 'kick-around' that you would in football. Rugby League is physically very competitive even at the lowest level so very difficult to get a novice group together and up to any sort of standard.

I've started playing with a new(ish) RL outfit down here and I'm finding that same problem. We get new lads down but as soon as we do some contact in training or put them in a game, they struggle. Maybe this is where Union is a better introduction as you can stick someone in the backs and ease them in moreso than in League. It hasn't helped that we've had a few games where the opposition (eg. South London Storm) have sent first team players down to play us (we only have one team but operate at a second team level), which has resulted in a real hammering. It's a shame as all it does is put our lads off making it harder to fulfil fixtures.

its a serious issue. Bury RU run 4 sides and a veterans side. Sedgley Park run 4 sides too. we've had players come from Bury RU's 2nd team and try RL this summer and struggle because of the physical difference and in theiry, the league they play in is some way above the league we play in when compared. The fact is, the sport is all about a certain physicality and its hard to get away from...and then you have how clubs run themselves - some deliberately look to recruit to 'batter' sides. that can kill interest in any new area. we finished bottom of the NWC two years in a row with our novices before moving up a division and finishing a strong mid-table position.
