Monitoring outside for the people inside: |
|
| Had a 30 mile bike ride today along Bridgewater canal. I went through Salford and would say that the stretch from Worsley to Boothstown has countryside to match anywhere in the country. I saw a few things that puzzled me:-
What is the lighthouse for in Winton. Was it used at one time, how old is it?
I knew about the famous rusty colour round Worsley and was watching to see when it changed. It was roughly near the lighthouse. But why is it only that colour going west, not the other way?
Near the old black and white building at Worsley there is a branch of the canal going off northwards. Where does it go to. Is there a tunnel there?
I got a bit lost where the canal goes over the ship canal by aquaduct. Is there a tow path over this viaduct or is the only way to come off the canal, lover the swing bridge and then rejoin on the other side.

Near the old black and white building at Worsley (Packet House) there is a branch of the canal going off northwards. Where does it go to. Is there a tunnel there? That's Worsley Delph , the entrance to the Duke of Bridewater's Coal mines , the reason for the Canal in the first place , supposedly 50 miles of tunnels starting there.

Is there a tow path over this viaduct or is the only way to come off the canal, over the swing bridge and then rejoin on the other side.(There used to be access to a walkway from the boatyard on the Barton side of the Swing Aquaduct, pre health & safety & hoody like '"

32990_1435324474.jpg First accept sadness. Realise that without losing 70% of the time, winning wouldn't be such a relief.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_32990.jpg |

| In 1977 on the Queens Silver Jubilee visit to the area they dropped large blocks of blue dye into the canal to disguise the orange coloured water.
The tunnels TF asks about: As Middleman says there are about 45-50 miles of water tunnels under parts of Salford. They were built for shifting coal from the various collieries. The tunnels were designed to be low height and width allowing the barges to be moved by workers laying flat on there backs and using their feet to move the barge along. This transport mode was known as 'Legging it'.
Some job hey, we don't know were born do we?
