When I was a lad (here we go), the three people we loved to hate were Fred Lindop (the ref who never gave Salford any decisions as far as I recall), Alex Murphy (obviously) and Eddie Waring - at college any discussion with southerners about the merits of our game was inevitably terminated with some knob from Kent or some other primitive place going "it's an up and underrrrr", trying to make fun of the whole game.

Some reckoned that Waring was good for the game. I was never convinced.

Nowadays I've no strong opinions about him. I wonder if anyone has any more?

I think that after tonight alot of people will realise just how much Eddie Waring actually did to raise the profile of the game and ensure we got coverage on the beeb.

I hope a lot of the younger fans bother to watch this feast of classic RL.
It should be great viewing and bring back some great memories.
Of course, the game has changed dramatically in the last 30 years (as has nearly everything else

), but I'm really looking forward to it.

In case anyone didn't know, the crowd footage they showed when talking about the formation of the game was from Salford's New Barnes stadium.
