Yes, ive seen something about this previously with a real hybrid of a game. Unlimited tackles until you get into the oppositions half then it was 6 tackles, scrums and lineouts but uncontested. Ball steals allowed

it could be interesting to see if it just stays as a one off / charity concept or if it actually develops into something more. i know we have had cross code games previously but all they proved were that the RL team was far superior at League and the Union team far superior at Union, unless the league team could actually get hold of the ball and ran it the full length icon_smile.gif

just googled it and found the attached URL, where there is also a link to the rules for the game

Interesting, but I struggle to understand what an 'uncontested line-out' is.

it will basically be that the side it is awarded to , effectively throw it to their own team. we need bear in mind its a charity game and some of the RL players wont have experienced being lifted 10ft into the air, with a 20stone, 7ft tall dude smashing you back down to earth icon_smile.gif

there were rules around the awarding of scrums, lineouts etc within the link, i just didnt post all of the rules

I remember Ray French once giving an interview in which he opined that, long-term, the only way for rugby to perpetuate itself as a major big money sport was for the top sides in RL and RU to join forces and combine their talent and resources in a single competition.

Whether that's being discussed at any level, maybe because of the parlous state of both RU and RL domestic games in the UK today, is uncertain of course, but it's probably unlikely.

The NRL doesn't need a hybrid version in order to survive. Likewise, international RU is doing fine without changing anything.

This sounds like nothing more than a charity one-off.

Rugby onion isn't really in that healthy a state. They've got the same issue with concussion claims that we have, plus they've had big name clubs fold in recent years.

It's bad enough that a Faily Mail journo wrote a piece suggesting a merger a month ago

rlhttps://archive.ph/DZW8Irl

Quote: "
Rugby should MERGE union and league to save the game we all love, argues CHRIS FOY
Officials should be considering the possibility of one version of the game
It's time to stop scrapping for a slice of the sporting market in a time of volatility
There just isn’t enough space for two codes to thrive – and both have their value

Which is surely why many league fans are suspicious of 'hybrid games'. When union went pro, there was a flurry of pieces in the media saying the codes should merge. Always comes from the union side of course. Our sport is just fine as it is. Adapting rules to make it more like union would not improve it.

Get rid of Lineouts, get rid of 2 players ,bring it down to 13,keep the scrums and we could be getting somewhere.

Objectively, in the modern era, with fit professional players, not tubs of lard, union would be a better game with 13 players, but as they insist on the primacy of their 16-man scrum, that's never likely to happen. Plus, they wouldn't to be seen as 'copying league', of course.

I hope the game is a success and makes a load of money, but I have absolutely no interest in union or any form of hybrid game. I grew up in the 70s and 80s when the hostility towards league was pretty intense. It was only when I moved away from Wigan that this became apparent. Union had to live alongside league in Wigan or it would have struggled. Not so in other places. The bloke who wrote the article would probably have been banned from his local club.

That's so true, Tony, as I lived most of my life elsewhere in the country and only moved to Wigan relatively recently.

The sports will never merge. The stumbling block will always be what to do when someone is tackled.

If it’s a play the ball the game will essentially be league, if it’s a rook/maul the game Will essentially be union.

I think the fuss about Suaalii playing for the Wallabies says a lot. He's a decent player, but hardly a jewel of the NRL; there are better centres, Herbie, for one! Maybe it says something about relative skill levels.
