Yes because it's ever going to happen that someone is going to be that far infront in the points table that he wont be caught up in 7 EXTRA games.
The 12 team league he was competing in isn't there anymore either but hey ho lets pretend nothing changed.

Does the top points-scorer win a prize? Is it a prize worth their while? Does he even care? Does scoring 20 points a game against Sheffield or Halifax really constitute as points in Super League?

There are a lot of inconsistencies in the betting industry regarding settlement of this years SL events. The biggest example is the Regular Season whereby come firms have paid out on a 23 game regular season (correctly IMO) while others are waiting until the end of the Super 8s (30 games). Some bookies simply haven't done their homework on the changes and in probably just copied prices from other firms

Any punters should check the relevant firms settlement procedure before placing a bet. That said I have checked again with one high street firm regarding one bet of mine and their esteemed customer service team couldn't tell me what was going on. I backed Wigan to win the regular season and was ready to throw my slip away but when they couldn't tell me their own settlement rules I decided to keep it and will try again if they finish top after 30 games.

Mantellato was a pretty big price for top points scorer IIRC, he was mentioned on an RL tipping Twitter page in pre-season for this market so I imagine there will be a few grievances if the OP is correct. Good luck getting your money though, you will need it.

It's a nice feather in the cap and yes it does get you a prize in the end of season awards, so yes I imagine he cares.

I never said his points in the middle 8 should count but then if we are saying that then I don't see how can you count the other EXTRA 7 games in a SL that is then reduced to 8 from 12 teams?

It seems to again be the RFL not thinking it through as they clearly never considered that someone could be top whose team then wouldn't make the super 8's. Just like the situation with the extra CC games when they didn't think any of the teams would make the QF's only for HKR and HFC to manage it.

The playing field is level though. Every player at every team in SL had an equal chance of playing 30 SL games this season. The fact that no Rovers player can do so now is not the RFL's fault.

Ask the bookies to pay out? It's not fair if they don't either include his points against the amateur sides or stop at the regular season-end.

Had a look into it for my own reasons, and Betfair sportsbook and Coral are the only ones that settle markets after 30 games. The rest settle all markets after 23 and he majority of firms now offer 'League Leaders Shield' after already settling the 'Regular Season' market.

It's interesting how the super 8s are treated, if they are an extension of the regular season or of the playoffs.
You hear the pre and post match interviews where players/coaches talk about "semi final footy" and sky seem to be showing almost every game in one form or another, thats more in line with how they treated the old playoffs than the regular season (be interesting to see what the tv deal says what they can/must do).
I'd have like to have seen them promoted as the playoffs, and the BBC to have picked up their national highlights program, because if they do that this year for the semi finals there will only be 2, half the coverage the game got in recent years.
