| Quote: David Smith ""We have to look at strengthening some of the emerging nations, and we have got to make the most of the international fixtures we have got, to get more games on the calendar so that next time round the ability has picked up in all nations."
'"
That is a great thing to hear David Smith say. He is the guy with control of the biggest pool of money in the code and his job description is basically to do what he can to improve the code, so he is the guy who is in the best position to make stuff happen.

| It takes a Welshman (not the New South type), who fought in the Falklands to sort the game out in oz. He is also a big Rugby Union fan, but we won't mention that.

| And yet no teams in two of the biggest cities in the country. Until the NRL is in WA and SA it can not call itself national. They are due to review expansion end of next season, hopefully they will announce the inclusion of a Perth team.

| The 2nd paragraph shows immediately the difference between the game in Oz and here.
Quote: "Rugby league is one of Australia's most popular sports,'"
RL might be popular in this country but it only has any real hold along the M62, and even then it has to compete with THE big sport in the country, Football, as it has both Manchester and Liverpool clubs as well as lower league teams all vying for the attention of fans but without football's monetary clout.

compared to Nigel Wood, and his colleagues at the RFL.

| Quote: EHW "This is what they are doing
That is the main problem at Red Hall for me.
Nigel Wood- Played the game, worked at BBC North for a bit, worked with Halifax then moved up to the RFL.
Ralph Rimmer- spent his working life pretty much entirely in the game.
Blake Solly- Solicitor but from what I can gather he has an RL background.
Barwick is the only exception to that rule, but in a non executive position he can only have so much influence.
The game needs someone to come in from a completely different background who can look at things differently whilst also having enough nouse to respect the tradition and culture of the game. Smith came in for a lot of unfair criticism when he took the job, because he couldn't answer silly questions from journalists about the game. But someone who can come in and be level headed is what you need to run any organisation.

Is there another kind of death, then?

Remember when they threw their toys out of the cot and said they were planning on packing up and moving to Super League? Oh how we laughed.

While our club game dies a slow terminal death, it looks like the game in australia is set to go from strength to strength
Well done to them building further on what they have got even when loaded up with cash.
However, it helps if you are not competing against soccer and have banked £670m TV rights and with a SC of £3.25m going up to £3.9m in a few years compared to SL's £90M over the same 5 year period and a SC of £1.85m.

| I don't get this not competing against soccer nonsense.
While Australian rugby league fans might not like to hear it the AFL is one of the most successful sporting competitions in the world, with a ridiculous 33k crowd average - a truly remarkable figure given the population of Australia relative to other countries.
Rugby League has faced no shortage of challenges in Australia, including AFL, Yawnion and soccer. Seems some people think rugby league in Aus is a big fish in a small pond when that's really not the case; they've had to fight hard to get where they are. Plenty of other predators in their pond.
Not saying that soccer isn't huge in England but people need to stop using it as the go-to excuse for the failures of rugby league in this country.
