IT'S often said you can't win without a good halves pairing and this World Cup has highlighted just how true that is.
Some teams that could have made the last eight, like Tonga and Italy, didn't because they lacked the controlling influence of a good halves pairing and others like Scotland punched above their weight because of their playmakers.
In Kieran Foran and Shaun Johnson, the Kiwis have a halves pairing that could guide them to consecutive world titles.
They are both still young, at just 23, but also growing in experience.
In fact, Johnson said it's "hard to believe [Foran's] only 23. He has an older head on him and has been around a while."
"They all call me an old man," Foran said with a wry smile.
England will field a similar combination to New Zealand's in Sunday morning's World Cup semifinal, in the fact one is strong and steady (Kevin Sinfield) and the other offers more playmaking ability (Rangi Chase).
Sinfield, though, doesn't tend to play the ball at the line as much as Foran, which is easier for defenders to contend with, and Chase is prone to errors (his seven is the fifth-equal most in the tournament). It doesn't mean they aren't a threat and the Kiwis are determined to keep the two quiet on Sunday.

Halves make or break you, it will be interesting to see how it pans out on the weekend.

| A good coach is just as important as good halves.
Fiji missed out on Sutton and Hayne in the halves, but they have been able to manufacture some reasonable options in Groome and Millard - even though Groome has spent the last few years playing hooker in park football and Millard has been a centre.
You have to wonder how well they would have gone with Sutton in the side, who has been one of the form players in the NRL this year.

Its this part that is the worry combined with a so-so Coach, it means the rest of the team have to do more to susidise a week half pairing.

The Kiwis have stormed through a poor quality group. The first test of their half back partnership, and the rest of the team for that matter, will come this weekend when they face England. Many have said that the Kiwis haven't missed Benji Marshall and so far this is true but his inventiveness could be the missing element on Saturday when their power game will not provide the advantage it has against Group B quality opposition

Maybe but Benji has been crap for several years and a Shadow of what he once was, even at his peak he was not consistent.
I think the Kiwis have been managed a lot better for this tournament, both on and off the field.
