| On its own a pretty useless stat. What were the fixtures in RD1 last year? Were Wigan/Leeds both at home? Etc

Perhaps their just coming round to to your way of thinking.
Quote: William Eve "The League Leaders Shield is an irrelevance just like the SL regular season. However, there are plenty of mugs in rugby league as evidenced by the number of season ticket holders.'"
The sooner the top four break away & play each other endlessly all season, the better.

What you really mean is that the stat doesn't fit snugly with the current vogue for positive SL news items ONLY? Like Nigel Wood claiming after Round 1 last year that [i"a total of 73,720 people attended the seven opening round fixtures, producing an average attendance of 10,531 - an increase of 12 per cent on last season's average attendance across Super League"[/i for instance? ![Cool icon_cool.gif](images/smilies//icon_cool.gif)

| There were 4 teams at home this year that were at home last year. Leeds, London, Salford and Bradford.
At Leeds the crowd was down by 46
At London the crowd was down by 2,068
At Salford the crowd was up by 141
At Bradford the crowd was down 186
So they're roughly the same bar London.
As for the remaining 3, in 2012 Widnes, Hull and Wigan were at home compared to Saints, Hull KR and Warrington.
2012
Widnes 8,120
Hull 12,710
Wigan 16,771
2013
Saints 12,003
Warrington 10,721
Hull KR 7,864
So really the difference is London's missing 2k and the fact Wigan were away instead of at home.

So we can expect this comparison every round from you then? With the accompanying celebrations for increases to match your depression over 'tumbling' attendances of course.

Round 1 attendances in SL this year = 64,387
The corresponding fixtures last year = 65,179
% drop in attendances = 1% (or, to put it another way, an average of 113 people per game)

| A pattern is emerging here.
Super League 2013 - Round 1 attendances = 64387/7 = 9198
Super League 2012 - Round 1 attendances = 73720/7 = 10531
Super League 2011 - N/A - Magic Weekend
Super League 2010 - Round 1 attendances = 78090/7 = 11156
Super League 2009 - Round 1 attendances = 78141/7 = 11163
*I make no apologies for not providing positive spin.

Corresponding fixtures last year
Leeds /Hull - JULY
Saints/Hudds - JULY
HKR/Catalan - JUNE
Brad/Wakey - JUNE
Lon/Widnes - JUNE
Wire/Cas - APRIL
S'ford/Wigan - MARCH
That these same fixtures took place on a pretty cold windy unpleasant February weekend this year would account for the 'massive' 113 less people per game I would imagine.
Also note Salford/Wigan was almost 1500 less this year, unsurprising given the off-field events at Salford.

The whole of Round 1 last year was played in atrocious weather conditions according to Nigel Wood, when he compared last years Round 1 average attendance to the average attendance for the whole of the 2011 SL season.
It goes without saying that the numerous sheep on this forum didn't question Wood's clumsily manufactured "water into wine" analysis but instead accepted it as universal truth of the RFL doing a fantastic job and further positive evidence of a sport on the march towards greatness.
If only they could get all the heretics onside with the same positive agenda for data analysis and interpretation.

Or you could just look at last year's fixtures and easily see where the difference came from instead of conveniently ignoring it just to drum home a personal agenda.
Last year Wigan played at home and got 16,771 whilst Wire played away.
Wire played at home this year and got 10,721 whilst Wigan played away.
London got 4,924 against Saints last year.
They only got 2,856 against Widnes this year.
Also Widnes drew 8,120 fans on their return to SL, over 2,000 more than their 2012 average.
At Salford's opening new ground they managed nearly 2,000 more against Castleford than they did when the teams last played at The Willows
That's over 12,000 fans in those four examples and neither are proof that SL is in trouble like you're trying to suggest.
What they say is Wigan attract bigger crowds than Wire......we all knew that anyway.
That Saints have more fans to travel than Widnes and are a bigger draw for the London fans, hardly a shock either.
Widnes expectly had a bigger than average crowd for their return.....shock again.
And that people turned out for Salfords stadium opener....shock, shock, shock.
So that's it really
- Wigan played away
- London didn't play a top team
- No team returning to SL
- No new stadium opening
Easy to see when you're not blinded by an agenda ![Very Happy icon_biggrin.gif](images/smilies//icon_biggrin.gif)
