Despite the 2011/12 season being still ongoing, Filton College Rugby League are already looking ahead to next season with the announcement of their 2012/13 trials. The trials will take place at the college's W.I.S.E campus on May 19 and June 3 and is open to any 16-18 year old players wishing to combine their education alongside top quality coaching and player development opportunities. The Academy has the advantage of two full time coaches, former Harlequins RL Scholarship coach and current England students assistant Dan Garbutt and RFL coach educator Tom James as well as one part coach in the shape of Bristol Sonics head coach Karl Fearnley. Squad members also benefit from the region's link with Super League champions Leeds Rhinos in getting ongoing development and input from the Rhino's South West performance coach, Andy Lindley. Based at the college's state of the art sports facilities, the programme also has full time physiotherapy and Strength and conditioning support as one of 14 Academies making up the Bristol Academy of sport.
The Rugby League Academy at Filton has been running since June of last year and in that time has had great success on a local, regional and national level. Competing against Universities, the academy consistently performed well in the SRL West of England league and then went on to win the Student Rugby League Plate defeating Newcastle University A in the final, a fantastic achievement from an under 19 side. The side are now currently in the midst of their Champion Colleges campaign with the squad facing a tough Champion Colleges semi-final against Wakefield College, at Derby RFC on Wednesday. The 2011/12 season has seen many players on the programme take huge strides in their personal development with the squad combining a mixture of experienced players and large numbers entirely new to the game at the beginning of the season. With England student trials still to come this year, personal player successes has included 3 players being selected for the South West student trials and prop/second row James Mason gaining selection for the U18 Wales Academy that compete in the Valvoline Academy programme alongside Super league U18 sides.
The trials will run on both days from 12pm-4pm on the College's Outdoor and indoor rubber crumb pitches and will consist of a brief introduction to the program followed by skill drills and modified games. The trial day is focussed on identifying talent to develop within the programme so no previous experience within the game of Rugby League is necessary.
