fascinating and scary article about impact injuries to NFL players but the parallels with RL are claer.
www.guardian.co.uk/science/2011/ ... -destroyed
I hope the RFL picks up on this.
It is not uncommon for RL players to play on or to play the following week after concussion, yet RU players are banned for 3 weeks.

What makes you think the RFL are not already on top of it as a possible issue?
As far back ay 2006 is this guidance on the wearing of soft headguards: www.therfl.co.uk/news/article/6137
there is also a Managing Head Injuries document available to clubs as well as posters to raise awareness.
As far as concussion injuries. I think (and would need to check) but all pro players are required to take a test before the season starts and are then tested again against that to assess whether they were actually carrying any ill-effects or not before they can play again.

Correct, they are tested Pre-season then again after a head injury, they have to score the same or within a certain amount in the after injury test before they play.

NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg |

| any sign of concussion should be off the field not to return and then a min 2 game sit out. This is going to be massive, I work in ALzheimer's field and the facts are becoming undeniable.
It's even worse in the NRL were players often stagger on without coming off.

Unfortunately it's usually an oncoming train:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_7741.jpg |

| Isn't there more chance of head clashing in the NFL due to the very fact they wear helmets so they are more likely to bash their heads against each other

At the mo and from memory, it's 7 days in the NRL.
I have a copy of a report published by Sports Medicine Australia into injuries in the NRL for the 2010 season. Makes interesting reading. I can type up some of the things on it if you're interested? I can't recall what they said about head injuries.

simpsons/PDT13.gif Brad Fitler "If the ref's decision decides your game. You haven't done enough prior."
Referees are like women, they make snap decisions and never reverse them.
Littlerich wrote Widnes will be glad to get away from Leigh. They've been regularly pumped, roasted and left in the alley-way by the lobbygobblers. Talk about being bitched - what a torrid time they've had. They'll be looking for some A&E rest time for the next three years at least.:simpsons/PDT13.gif |

| If a player loses consciousness, however brief, referees are advised to not allow the player to continue/return to playing in that game.

| The RFL seem to be on top of head injuries.
I do remember when Jonny Lomax suffered a bad head injury at U15's level and all amateur leagues were told to recommend headguards and got posters to advertise them.

| I wear a headguard for the simple fact I always tackle low, and have therefore kopped more than my fair share of knees, hips, etc to the head and spend a few minutes wondering which team I'm playing for.
Though as the RFL study says, it does give you a slightly false sense of security and I probably throw myself into things a bit more than I should.

i used to wear one when i played in the front row at hooker. I played in a front row that loved to 'join' a scrum with a bit of bite... got a bad clash of heads one day then put a skullcap on...
i found myself throwing my head into tackles more than i would have done had i not been wearing one.
So they're probably not that good for your health in that respect.

I used to wear one as a kid playing union, but as I got older I found it was just getting in the way and was annoying me so stopped. Although it's unbelievably stupid I don't even wear a gum shield, but I find I play better without the protection.
