Filton College’s list of sports academies has grown again with the launch of a brand new Rugby League Academy based at the WISE Campus in Stoke Gifford – and would-be League stars of the future are being given a chance to stake their claim to a place on the programme.

The Academy, which will open its doors for the first group of students in September, will be run by the newly appointed Head Coach Dan Garbutt. Garbutt , the current Oxford University Head Coach who also works with England Students, was formerly a Scholarship Academy Coach with Superleague team Harlequins Rugby League and coached on the Rugby Football League’s Junior Performance Pathway. With support from The RFL and Leeds Rhinos, the Academy will aim to provide a route through to the professional game for talented Rugby players from across the region.

The Rugby League Academy will be part of the Bristol Academy of Sport that includes the College’s 13 existing Academies, ranging from Football to Taekwondo, that have been built up since Rugby union began at Filton 10 years ago. Students involved in the Academy will benefit not only from the College’s superb facilities, which opened in 2005 as part of the Colleges £18m WISE Campus development, but also have access to full time Physiotherapy and Strength and conditioning support.

[i“We’ll be initially aiming to identify a squad of between 25 and 30 players for the first season and competing against a mixture of college and club teams,” [/isaid Garbutt [i“it’s a bit of a blank canvas currently but with the resources available to us here at the Bristol Academy of Sport, in terms of facilities, injury prevention and facilities, I expect the group to develop quickly” [/i

The recruitment process is well underway at Filton for the 2011 squad with a number of existing students as well as local Rugby players having been identified. The college will be hosting a open trial at the WISE Campus on the 1st of June and will then confirm the squad ahead of pre-season training starting in July. The trial day, running from 10am – 2pm, will consist of coaching in some of the skills and techniques of Rugby League leading in to a series of modified games.

Garbutt is confident that the trial will unearth plenty of Rugby talent“We’ve already been able to identify some talented players, through the help of our colleagues within the College, and I’m certain there are a whole group of players out there that would be ideally suited for Rugby League. The trial is totally open and we hope to see as many interested players there as possible”[/i

In addition to the Academy itself Garbutt will also be working closely with Bristol Sonics, the city’s successful Rugby League Conference Club, in order to develop community Rugby League within the region. This summer sees the launch of an extensive Junior Rugby League Programme in the city and plans are being put in place for The Sonics to develop into a semi-professional National League club by 2015.

Great news!

Now, this is really how we should be expanding the game, a long term sustainable solution to build up a pathway for players to support the existing conference club, into hopefully a Championship club, and possibly to build up an eventual SL club in 10 or more years.

Yes, something which has never happened before is surely the way for us to go. I mean a club never, ever, in the history of the game making that jump from group of guys playing, to amateur club, to championship club, to SL club is no reason for us not to think that this isnt a long-term sustainable solution to expanding the game. Its lack of any success whatsoever definitely shouldnt tell us that it may not be the way to expand the game.

Or maybe the fact it has never happened in 100+years of rugby league might lead us to the conclusion that it would be a nonsense to rely on this kind of thing to expand the game. Because its not meant to expand the professional game. This isnt supposed to lead to an SL team in Bristol, and unsurprisingly it wont.

What it will lead to is the fantastic benefit of better facilities and better coaching for the best young players in the area, hopefully leading some of them to be able to get a career in the game.

If SL or the championships come about it will completely unrelated and completely separate, it will come from someone very rich, putting a lot of money into either the conference club or a new club.

This isnt a criticism of what has been done here by the way. It is a great achievement, great news, and will be a wonderful opportunity for the kids down there. It is the right thing to do, and an achievement in and of itself. It is exactly what we should be doing throughout the country because it is the right thing to do, not because of some nonsensical logic that links it to the professional game.

Is it just me or is there quite a bit of momentum for RL in the South West at the moment?

Firstly, stop stalking me...

I know that I am your intellectual superior and that I challenge you and, that you like arguing with me because I present well structured debates but come on.... icon_wink.gif

I have to say that this is probably your weakest argument yet and I am suspect a hint of trolling creeping in now... but I will give you the benefit of the doubt!

I think you are totally wrong and this is the way to grow the game at all levels outside of the heartlands. Firstly, you missed the main point. That the key to sustainability is to build from the bottom up and not the top down, so I am talking about this initiative leading to more amateur clubs and players, who in turn feed and support the existing conference club. The longer term ambition would be then that when the club did start to move into the national leagues (2015 is their target) that they at least had a healthy local feeder network upon which to recruit players. So the team was mainly made up of local lads with a desire to play the game. It is not until this club, and the amateur pyramid that supports it, is well and truly established in the lower levels of the Championship should you ever, ever think of looking to make the leap to Championship and then SL.

Where you are now making yourself look a total idiot is talking about how this might "hopefully leading some of them to be able to get a career in the game"... where exactly... err, Leeds, Bradford, Wigan, Warrington... because they don't have a local club to play at do they!

Perversely, if you then just set-up a high level club in Bristol too early of without doing many years and years of work at the amateur level, what actually happens is that you have team full of Northern Lads who in the main are rejects of loan players from other SL clubs and Aussie/NZ/French journey-men who are also just not quite good enough to play in their own top flight leagues. So while you might have a club playing in Bristol, the chances of anyone playing in the club who are from Bristol is slim... unless of course you have a good amateur set up and schools playing the game...

This is the unsustainable bit, you need to put in this work first and the reason expansion has not worked to date is because this hasn't been done and what we see is the RFL trying to build the game from the top down. We generally don't build buildings from the top down, because to do so is counter productive, unstable and expensive... we build them from the bottom up!

Firstly, Bristol is not South Wales... close, but I understand what you mean.

Secondly, I think that the work being put in South Wales is great too and this has been ongoing for many years... they have a good little Championship club down their too to head the pyramid for longer term sustainable expansion... you never know, in another 8 to 10 years they might be ready, with sound financial backing, to come into SL!!!

Smart move by the Rhinos too, I'm assuming their involvement will mean they get first shot at any potential professional talents that emerge.
