The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce that Michael Maguire has agreed to join the Club as Head Coach for the next three seasons.
Maguire, 37, will return to Australia having been the Head Coach of the Wigan Warriors for the past 18 months, leading the English Club to the Super League Championship in his first year as Head Coach.
Previously he was part of the successful Melbourne Storm Club as Assistant Coach between 2005 and 2009 after starting his coaching career in 1998 at the Canberra Raiders.
Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson says Michael Maguire is highly regarded amongst his peers and players both here in Australia and in Europe.
“We’re very pleased to have Michael joining us for our next three premiership campaigns and hopefully many more successful years to follow,” Mr Richardson said.
“We have worked hard to build a strong culture at the Rabbitohs over recent years and from our discussions with Michael we have determined that he is the right the man to come into this Club and take us to the next level.
“He is highly respected in the Rugby League community and has learned his trade under some of the best coaches in the game including Craig Bellamy. We believe that he will not only develop our top 17 players, but the Club as a whole.
“He has already had great success with Wigan and Melbourne, and we’re looking forward to him bringing those experiences to our Club from next season.
“In saying all of that there is still work to be done in season 2011 and John Lang is doing a great job with our current squad.
“He’s working as hard, and is equally as passionate today, as he was when he first started coaching and we’re looking forward to a successful season this year, before having Michael join us next season.”
Rabbitohs Chairman Nicholas Pappas added: “The Board of Directors and the Club’s investors are delighted with the appointment of Michael as our Head Coach for at least the next three seasons.
“We welcome him to the Club on behalf of our 20,000-plus Members and our many Corporate Partners.”
Coach Maguire said he is happy to be returning home with a Club such as South Sydney.
"The Rabbitohs have a strong playing list, renowned history and big expectations. I look forward to working with everyone in the organisation to drive towards the success the Club desires,” Maguire said.
"I wish John all the best for the 2011 season and look forward to starting a new challenge in November."

| I wouldn't RB, next to a controlling 5/8th and a FB who can take some ball handling responsibilities Sandow could prosper.

| As a Wigan fan all I can say is that Souths have landed themselves a fantastic coach who knows how to organise both his backroom & playing staff.
He led us to the title last season with virtually the same player roster we'd had the prior season so I think that illustrates how good a job he's done.
Souths fans needn't be worried, their team will be in very safe hands. But you'll have to wait until 2012 to see.
