www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... 1cc0q.html
under the new regime of harrigan they have been enforcing a lot of things including off side at the kick offs, correct PTBs, drop outs not passing the try line and the way scrums are set
today a penalty was awarded for feet across the tunnel, something ive not seen for at least 10 years
scrums have to be bound properly as well
im not sure we are going down the right path with this ....
edit : the new PTBs are much better, rather than just rolling it between the legs real contact with the foot must be made, it looks more like proper footy
just when they start penalzing scrum infriengements, where do they stop?

| Scrum penalties are usually differential anyway. So only 2 choices as oppose to the usual 3.

| Apart from scrums, all the others get penalised in the UK anyway.
Worst scrum offence I saw was Bobby Goulding in a cup game v Saints. He didnt even put the ball in, just dummied it and ran round the back of the scrum. Ref said play on.

| I don't play rugby but have supported Wire all my life and what i can't understand is ...why have a scrum? In Union the scrum is contested but in League the ball is just fed into the back row with no contest from the opposing pack pack. Surely something else could be done instead of this.
Just my opinions by the way.

yay, waste time setting and resetting scrums so we can have a competition for a ball we cant see. What a great spectacle that would be.
If it wasnt a union invention, we would have the lineout replacing the scrum already. It is a spectacle, and it is a competitive way of restarting the game, doesnt take long to set up and allows for vast variation.

| and the funniest thing was when they got a penalty... the players didnt know that it was a differential penalty, or what that meant!!!
Jamie Soward had to have it explained by the ref!
shows how long since the scrums were penalised... and IMO returning to the penalty offered nothing to the game but an excuse for the ref to blow the whistle!!

Your quite right - why not make it honest. Lets mark four circles - one in each quarter of the field, and instead of a messy scrum get the 12 forwards to stand within the circle - maybe holding hands? - while the backs line up for a tap restart.
Nothing up with a contested rugby league scrum, if the players and officials know what they are doing.

It's not a "union invention" it is a legacy from our shared history pre 1895 and we ditched it in 1897 (and, IMO, haven't missed it).

Well, maybe rephrasing as "would be looked upon as a union invention" would be better.
Semantics aside, it would work better than the scrum does currently and would be a competitive and varied way of restarting the game.
